CLAUDIA H. STURM NEWPORT NEWS - Claudia Harper Sturm, 76, died Saturday, May 18, in York Convalescent Center. A native of Norfolk, Mrs. Sturm had been a Peninsula resident for 61 years. She retired as a school teacher with the Newport News Public Schools after more than 30 years of service, mostly in Newport News High School. Mrs. Sturm was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. She graduated from Longwood College, Farmville, and did graduate work at the University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary. Survivors include a daughter, Judy S. Lakin of Newport News; three grandsons; and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight in Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Peninsula Memorial Park by the Father James C. Ditty. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, 753 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News 23606, or a favorite charity. Mrs. Sturm taught
me both freshman and sophomore English. Although we covered the entire
spectrum of language
related topics, I most clearly remember writing themes in class. She would
write a topic on the board at the beginning
of class, and we would take the entire period to expound upon it. More
than once, I recall the topic was "Hitch Your Wagon
to a Star". Like all of our splendid NNHS teachers, she taught us to aim
high and to excel. I wish I had thanked her, just once.
