Does anyone remember the Lighthouse restaurant in
Phoebus? It was destroyed years ago, but
several of us
went there after the prom in 1964. It was at the bridge near Sam's Restaurant. I can't remember seeing
any postcards from Dave
(Spriggs - '64 - of VA) showing it.

Thanks, Cookie!
The
Lighthouse Restaurant in Phoebus
was
actually built on the water on poles or stilts, if that's what they're
called.
It was owned by Don DeBlasio, who lived across the street
from me. His niece is Sandra DeBlasio Anthony
(HHS - '65).
Not sure if he lost ownership or if a storm destroyed it, but it has not
been there for a long, long time.
Sam's Restaurant is still there, though.

Thanks, Gloria!
Sorry to inform Gloria Woolard Price, of HHS ('65 - of FL) , about Sam's, but it's also
gone! Isabel
took most
of it, putting it out of
business, and just recently a fire finished it!! Apparently, some vagrants
(I hate to use
homeless, because it makes me sick to think that we would
allow our own to live in such a way) were living
in the shell and somehow
set it ablaze. Again, Sam's is gone; sorry!

OH, NO!!! Thanks, Wayne!
... I saw
another article in the paper this morning about Sam's Restaurant with a picture
showing it pretty much
"leveled". It was just a blip about it in an article about state spending for
Hampton, I believe. Maybe in his many
travels around the Peninsula with his wonderful camera, Dave Spriggs ('64 - of
VA) could capture a picture of it.

Oh, Da-vid.... If you're so inclined, please, Captain?? "Nobody
does it better."
Thanks, Sandi!
Sam's Restaurant
is mentioned in the newsletter today. It is no longer there. It was taken out by
the last hurricane.
An article in Daily Press today discussed the redevelopment of that of that
property.

Thanks, Gus!
Everyone who has
reported the fire and the end of Sam's restaurant is correct. The property is
currently
owned by a Norfolk syndicate and a likely candidate for redevelopment.

Thanks, Kathy!
Carol,
Something told me that I should get to Hampton today and get the shot of Sam's.
... Then, down
Mellen Street to Sam's. When I arrived, I waited a few minutes, hoping the
trucks would leave.
When it became apparent that they were not going anywhere, I took the shot. They
had backed their trucks
up underneath the sign. I asked if they were going to remove the sign today, and
they said yes. At that
instant, I knew why I had felt the need to go to Phoebus today. Tomorrow and
forever would have been too late.
It gets better; they told me that they had planned to remove the sign yesterday,
but had not been able to get to it.

What an incredible story to go with your fabulous image!
David, thank you so much for listening to that still, small voice!
