Sammy's Grocery
Store |
|
THEN: | NOW: |
For years now I've been trying to recall a small grocery somewhere, and can't quite remember... The one that's been floating around in my mind and driving me bonkers (I know - How can I tell?!?) was also on Wickham, but on the opposite side of the street from the pool, and of course I've no idea what block that might have been. Was it called Sammy's, maybe? |

Sammy's was on Chestnut Avenue between 22nd and 23rd. I lived on Hampton Avenue near Oak (right across the street from the Flaxes) and I remember going to Sammy's on my bike for ice cream or sodas and "charging it." When my dad went by Sammy's on Sunday morning for the paper, he would pay off my charges! |

Oh,
thank you so much, Karen! You've no idea how that's bothered me!

Has anyone made mention of Sammy's, that little hole-in-the-wall store on Chestnut Avenue? Pam (Smith Arnold - '65 - of VA) (of Cousin Pam fame) and I would stop there every Wednesday afternoon following choir practice at Chestnut Avenue Methodist. I loved the "Dots" on the paper and the JuJuBees. It was a highlight of our week, believe me. Probably blew 5 or ten cents there each time we went. We were big spenders, even back then. |
