Carol,
Thought this would be interesting to share with other NNHS classmates. Debbie Pierce Atkinson came to one of our meetings and suggested that along with the reunion weekend wouldn’t it be great for Class of ’69 to give back to the community. We really couldn’t plan anything physical so we checked around and decided to purchase Agenda Books for the students at Magruder Elementary. We chose Magruder because it is one of the few schools that is still open that some of the classmates attended. Newport News School Board has always purchased the agenda books for the students but with the economy and budget cuts they had to cut them from the budget this coming school year.
The Agenda Books used by Newport News students are a valuable home-to-school communication tool. The front pages of each book gives important school telephone numbers, email addresses of the staff, the school calendar, and the school’s handbook. There are also pages that explain and define the rights and responsibilities for Newport News Schools. The most valuable pages are the ones that serve as a “planner” for the student. On these pages daily and weekly homework assignments are written and daily parent signatures show documentation for the elementary Home Reading Program. Notes and communications between the teachers and parents can also be written as needed on the weekly pages. One additional important feature of the elementary Agendas is a clear plastic pocket that serves as a safe place to send important papers and report cards between home and school. The Agendas are expected to travel between home and school daily and are checked by both teachers and parents.
The cost of these books for the students at Magruder Elementary came to approximately $750.00. The company Debbie works for donated $500.00 of the cost and we hope to raise the additional $250.00. We are also helping with library books and supplies. A few classmates have already sent in donations to Magruder and others have pledged to do so. Maybe some other classes might want to give back to the community also.
