Drowned in a Kayak Accident
Thomas Nelson Community College  My brother ... Garland drowned in a kayak accident in 2001.  He worked for NASA and loved to play Country music with bands in the tidewater area, even though he was profoundly deaf.  It really surprised people to learn that, as he could read lips.  More than once it got him into trouble at school for talking when the teacher called for quiet.  He is dearly missed.
Thank you for a job very well done,

- Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 03/14/08
Thank you, Ruthie.

GARLAND D. REECE

He was an active member of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a teacher in the Children's Primary program. He led the members on many river trips and other activities. He began as an apprentice at NASA in his early 30s, and at the time of his death, had been employed as an engineering technician for more than fifteen years. He was also employed as an instructor at New Horizons. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 58 and achieved the rank of Life Scout. Garland loved nature and went rock climbing, camping, and paddling often. He was a member of the Coastals Canoeist Club, where he served as president for three years and was the current Trip Master. Garland was an expert certified instructor and taught many people the sport of paddling, which he loved. He was a talented musician and played the bass guitar and many enjoyed his music. Garland enjoyed carving small figures from wood.

Garland goes to his Heavenly Father and leaves to treasure his memory his wife, Sharon, and sons, Dale, Matthew and Jesse of Poquoson; his parents, Bill and Ruth Reece of Newport News; his brother, Bill Reece and his wife, Vicky, of Pocatello, Idaho; two sisters, Ruth Horace and her husband, Harry, of Lecanto, Fla., and Kathy Burke and her husband, Charlie, of Hampton; his sister-in-law, Tina Harris and brother-in-law, Tom Harris, both of Poquoson; several nieces and nephews, Amanda, David and Danny Burke of Hampton, Jon, Amy, Sherri, Sandy and Kimmy Horace of Lecanto, Fla., Bill Reece Jr. of Soda Springs, Idaho, Cortney Harris of Poquoson and other relatives and friends.

This page was developed through the tireless efforts of Carol Anne Comer Cutler ('70) of VA and Roberta Hilsdon ('70) of GA,
who gathered the names of their deceased classmates.  Roberta then enlisted the help of an unknown (to me) individual, who then
scanned the entire senior section of the 1970 Anchor, and placed that on a CD which Roberta then mailed to me on 08/13/07.

Thank y'all so very much!
