Wilbert Oscar Horton

Wilbert Oscar Horton, 61, known by his friends and family as Bill, of Sarasota, Fl., passed away at his home on Friday, August 23, 2002. Bill was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., but moved to Newport News, Virginia, at an early age. He is the son of Harry C. Wheeler Sr., and the late Thelma Wheeler of Newport News. In the mid-80s, Bill and his family moved to Florida where they lived in several cities including Sarasota, Bradenton and Fort Myers.

Bill proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958-1962. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Warwick Lodge #336 and the Scottish Rite, as well as member of the Shriner's at Sarasota's Shahib Temple. Bill was a jack-of-all trades. During his lifetime, he worked as a radio disc jockey, a baseball scout, a finance manager at Hilltop Porsche-Audi in Virginia Beach, and a member of the Sports Information Team at Old Dominion University, among others. Bill was known for his amusing antidotes and stories and was a wealth of knowledge and information.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Roslyn Capron-
Horton of Sarasota, his eldest daughter, Cindi R. Fitz and her husband, Corky, of Gloucester, VA, his son, Christopher Sean Horton and his wife, Susie, of Palm Coast, Fl., and his youngest daughter, Katina "Kat" Lynn Horton-Gregory and her husband, Eric, of Cape Coral, Fl. In addition, he is survived by seven wonderful grandchildren, Corey Fitz, Melissa Fitz, Jessica Fitz, Sara Horton, Cal Horton, Hunter Rose Gregory and Colin Gregory. Bill is also survived by his sisters, Charlotte Sims, Zonona Woods, and Terry Hill, his brother, Harry C. Wheeler Jr., and many nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.

Services are currently being planned. The family request that flowers not be sent, however, memorial contributions can be made to Roslyn C.
Horton, P.O. Box 51023, Sarasota, Fl 34232.

Following a stroke, Bucky was given an arterial gram - blockage in carotid artery.  His brain swelled and he never regained consciousness.

In your previous message to me you mentioned Bucky as being referred to as the "king." Ironically, as teenagers, remember how we loved the "king" - Elvis Presley - Elvis died during Bucky's state of unconsciousness.
