..... I graduated from HHS in '64 and my wife graduated from Warwick HS in '66,
so we share a lot of the same memories of Hampton and Newport News. What a time
to be a teenager. Good ole
WGH, The Top 30, Shock
Theater, The Tunnel Of Love, The Drive Ins
and of course Shoney's,
Hygeia Skating Rink, The fantastic
city pool at 28th and Wickham,
Monty's Penguin, The Rebel at the corner of
Mercury and Pembroke, George's Record Shop in
Phoebus, The Palace and
Paramount Theaters, the Ice Cream shop
in Hilton that has Orange Ice ice cream
( can't remember the name of the place but was owned by the Urutia
family), the construction of the original Interstate 64 and the HRBT, and
the list goes on and on.

Carol:
A couple of days ago, one
of your contributors mentioned an ice cream store in
Hilton, run by the
Urrutia family. Here's some information, thanks to my limited memory and - more
importantly - to details gleaned from a copy of the proper page of the Warwick
City Directory of 1954 (which Dave Spriggs ('64 - of
VA) kindly provided to me some months ago).
Actually, that store - FRESH FRUIT ICE CREAM COMPANY - was once owned and
operated by the in-laws of Huyke Urrutia. He married Peggy Barber,
whose sister - Pat - was a high school classmate of mine and my wife (WHS
- Class of 1954).
The business was located at 504 Warwick Road, just north of where Brandon Road
intersects what is now Warwick Boulevard. The telephone number - then - was 8-0262.
In 1954, Huyke and Peggy lived upstairs, over the store, and she probably worked
in the store during the day, and he may well have worked there in the evenings
and on weekends.
Huyke was a NNHS grad, and also an apprentice school graduate (class of
1944). His father was as Spanish teacher at NNHS (in the 30s) - Dave has some
info about him (of course!). Huyke's older brother, Wilson, also was a
NNHS/Apprentice School graduate. Wilson completed his apprenticeship in 1940.
I once worked with Wilson in the shipyard, and slightly knew Huyke through the
NNS Credit Union, where he was a Director for many years. Wilson is deceased,
but Huyke may still around - at least he's listed in the current Peninsula
telephone directory.

WOWZERS! Thanks, Bill!
Carol,
Thanks to Bill Lee (WHS - '54
- of NC) who identified the ice cream shop in Hilton and gave the
history. I can remember going in there
and the white fans over head spinning
and moving around the luscious smell of fresh cream and fruit. I always
ordered the orange ice flavor......yummy!!!!! Couldn't find that flavor any
where else that I knew of. Bank of America is on the site where it
used to be.

Thanks, F.A.!

Ice Cream
(Sarah McLachlan)
Your love is
better than ice cream
Better than anything else that I've tried
And your love is better than ice cream
Everyone here knows how to fight
And it's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Where we started from
Your love is better than chocolate
Better than anything else that I've tried
Oh, love is better than chocolate
Everyone here knows how to cry
It's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Where we started from...
