A view of First Street just off Buckroe Beach in Hampton on Sept. 18 at about 3 p.m. Waves were crashing through these homes and spilling into the street in front of them. There was a virtual river flowing from left to right at least 4 feet deep.

It swept cars, refrigerators and house debris down the street. The two homes at left have been condemned. The street buckled under four feet of sand and debris and most of the roadway will have to be replaced. Power was restored to this street around 2 p.m.
on Sept. 22.
