| "A colorful feature is the Senior Flagtwirlers who add interest and entertainment to football games and pep assemblies with their snappy routines and skits. Flagtwirler aspirants practice during the year and go through a series of eliminations in the spring. The new flagtwirlers are chosen by the band director and present flagtwirlers. Being a flagtwirler involves many hours of hard work and practice. Aside from football games and pep assemblies, flagtwirlers march in parades with the band and appear in band concerts." | "THE NEWPORT NEWS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR BAND contributes much to the enjoyment of the student body. "Drum Major,
Carleton Spivey, leads Band Sweetheart, Marjorie Krause, onto the field for the traditional ceremony. The presentation of the Band Sweetheart took place at the Craddock football game. The drum major has other duties besides leading the band at football games. He assists the band director in planning football half-time shows and in working out programs. The band sweetheart is elected each year by members of the Senior Band." |
