S and M Produce |
|
Here is a picture of the produce truck (plus two more pictures I found) for S&M Produce that my daddy, Dick McCain (M) and his business partner and friend, Ken Strayer (S) ran back in the late 40's. They ran their truck through Stuart Gardens and the other neighborhoods and apartment complexes that were in the area at that time. My dad is the gentleman on the right. Notice their cute little "coats" that they wore. Later they opened a little store on Wickham Avenue. I can't remember what it was called, but they were put out of business when the bigger grocery stores opened in the Stuart Gardens Shopping Center. Their little store also caught on fire and I don't think they had adequate insurance. I remember going to the store after hours and riding my tricycle up and down the aisles. They delivered groceries and ran credit. My Mother used to complain that Daddy didn't "collect" on his outstanding bills from their clients. She kept the books showing all the delinquent accounts until after he died Some of the "high and mighty" (as she used to call them) owed Daddy a lot of money that was never collected. Thought you might be interested in this little bit of history of NN. |
