Thanks, Elizabeth!

These were taken in the 1980's. The two buildings (Bill's Barbeque and High's Ice Cream Store)
were right across the street from each other on Kecoughtan Road.
I worried that these cool old buildings would not last into the 21st century,
and it's now it's sad to realize that my fears came true.
I particularly mourn the loss of Bill's! I can remember Bill's Barbeque and High's Ice Cream as far back
as the late 50's but have clearer memories from the 60's. (I graduated from Hampton High School in 1971).
The Bill's building dated back to the 20's or 30's and the High's building looked to be even older.
When I was a kid, my absolute favorite meal was a Bill's hamburger and a limeade,
eaten in my Mom's car or when I was a little older, inside in one of the cheerful booths with pals.
I think I probably left my first restaurant tip at Bill's.
High's was great for their delicious chocolate milkshakes on a hot summer evening,
when I was about 13 and actually trying to gain weight.
Those were the days!!

WOWZERS!!!  Thanks, Elizabeth!

There were six other Hampton locations for High's;
one was at 3500 Kecoughtan (corner of Cherokee and Kecoughtan).
The 1952 City Directory lists four more High's locations in Newport News:
2715 Jefferson Avenue, 369 Warwick Road (Hilton), 2012 Wickham Avenue, and 907 - 25th Street.

COOL!  Thanks, Tom!

The pictures of Bill's Barbecue and High's Ice Cream were really a kick for me.
When I was little and my parents had NO MONEY...
we would stop at High's and get an ice cream...this was a family treat.
The ice cream was a nickel for a small scoop.
If they had a little more money we went to Bill's and got Barbecue sandwiches and Cokes.
Simple pleasures...so sweet and lovely to remember.

Ice Cream

(Sarah McLachlan)

Your love is better than ice cream
Better than anything else that I've tried
And your love is better than ice cream
Everyone here knows how to fight

And it's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Where we started from

Your love is better than chocolate
Better than anything else that I've tried
Oh, love is better than chocolate
Everyone here knows how to cry

It's a long way down
It's a long way down
It's a long way down to the place
Where we started from...
