From the Daily Press - 12/30/16:

              John Whitman Lawson

NEWPORT NEWS - On Christmas Eve, John "Jack" Whitman Lawson, 88, of Newport News, Virginia, gracefully departed this life to join his beloved wife, Helen Wray Lawson, and the Lord.

Born in Newport News, Virginia, John was the oldest son of Benjamin Franklin Lawson and Bertha Boyer Lawson, also of Newport News. He graduated from Newport News High School, and attended Virginia Tech as a member of their Cadet Corps.

During the summer of 1950, while working as a lifeguard at the Newport News City Pool, John met his soon to be wife, Helen, and the soul mates were inseparable ever since. The duo ultimately married on January 12th, 1951.

John went on to become a respected business owner and certified land surveyor in the Hampton Roads area for 65 years. One of his most notable surveying contributions was most notably playing an instrumental role in laying out the framework for many subdivisions that arose during Newport News' "growing years."

He was also a past member of the Oyster Point Cove's Architectural Committee, as well as the Virginia Association of Surveyors, Peninsula Chapter.

John will also be fondly remembered for his love of the beach, his artful skill regularly playing the Virginia Lotto, his vibrant and passionate spirit, but mostly the love, compassion, and undying devotion both he and his wife shared during their 64 years of marriage.

John was the adored brother of Francis Lawson Powell (William), father of Dr. Cheryl Lawson and John Lawson Jr. (Diane). He was also the beloved grandfather to Jamie Lawson, John Lawson Ill, Julia Bowditch (Gray), and his cherished "grand dogs," Brody and Luke.

John is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his father, Benjamin Franklin Lawson, his mother, Bertha Boyer Lawson, his stepmother, Gladys Edwards Lawson, and his brother, Charles Theodore Lawson.

Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Peninsula Funeral Home.

The Lawson family wishes to thank the staff of Riverside Regional Medical Center, as well as the private duty section of Riverside Home Health Care, for continually and unselfishly caring for him and always treating him with the faith, dignity, and respect that he deserved. He was especially fond of his caretakers Karen, Fran, Lawanda, Regina, Tyanne, Rashonda, Laquanda, Melody, and Cheryl, who had been a part of his life for years.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends who will forever cherish his always happy and friendly personality. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Shall We Gather at the River

Words and Music by Rev. Robert Lowry (1826-1899)

 Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Chorus

Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Chorus

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

Chorus

Soon we'll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
