Ring Out, Wild Bells

“Home is the wallpaper above the bed, the family dinner table, the church bells
in the morning, the bruised shins of the playground, the small fears that come
with dusk, the streets and squares and monuments and shops that constitute
one's first universe.

- Henry Anatole Grunwald
(03 Dec 1922 - 26 Feb 2005)

From http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/ring_out_wild_bells.htm

"Alfred, Lord Tennyson is considered the most representative poet of the Victorian Age in England, and many of his works characterize the conflict between the Christian faith and the beginnings of the scientific revolution. The death of his sister's fiancé, Arthur Henry Hallam, at the age of 22 plunged Tennyson into profound shock and a lifelong struggle between faith and doubt. "Ring Out, Wild Bells," generally considered a New Year's hymn, is taken from the 106th Canto of In Memoriam, Tennyson's monumental elegy to Hallam that was published in 1850, the same year that he was appointed Poet Laureate."

PRAYER REQUEST:

     From Me ('65) of IL - 12/13/09 (altered for date and repeated):

   I feel strongly impressed today to ask your fervent prayers on behalf of five people whose issues have not been mentioned here before. What I'm actually requesting is Five Christmas Miracles, as the various problems all need to find a resolution by New Year's Eve. I know that's only one day away now, but I also know among us there are some Mighty Prayer Warriors, and I would deeply appreciate your efforts, as I'm sure would they! Thank you all so very much - and Happy New Year!

      From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 12/29/09 - "Snowman Building 101":

Dear Carol,

Please tell   Ivan Anker ('67 - of VA) that he didn't see any snowmen because it was the wrong kind of snow.  This snow was powder and wouldn't hold together.  You couldn't even make a decent snowball!  You must have a wetter snow that will pack in order to make a snowman.

I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas, and that you and yours will have a very happy and blessed New Year!

Love,
Jean

   GIGGLES! Thanks, Jean! Ja, I was right; it was a case of the wrong type of snow.

    BUT STILL - NO SNOWMEN?!? How very sad! I LOVE snowmen so!

   Snow  without snowmen is akin to snow without school being cancelled; it just seems such a waste and a twisting of the natural order of things.

   And speaking of snow, it's snowing here again today - and we have company coming in from all over, too!

      From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 12/29/09 - "Ridding of 2009 ickies":

For good luck to start in the upcoming year>>>>>>>>>

Tag someone else to rid yourself of all ickies before we enter 2010.

Rules: you can't send it back to the sender and send only to those who have a sense of humor.

   MORE GIGGLES! Thanks, Shari!

      From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 12/29/09 - " 2010 Hooters Calendar!":

You guys are going to LOVE this one. Just for the fun of it, what do you gals think?

   WILDER GIGGLES! Thanks, Wayne! I think that's a real, um - HOOT!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 12/29/09:

Falling Apart

There's quite an art to falling apart ....
as these years go by.
And life Doesn't begin at 40 ....
That's a Big Fat Lie!

My hair's gettin' thinner ....
my Body is Not.
The few Teeth I have ....
are beginning to Rot!

I smell of Vick's-Vapo-Rub ....
Not Chanel #5.
My new Pacemaker's all ....
that keepin' me alive!

When asked of my past ....
Every Detail I'll know.
But what was I doin' ....
just 10 minutes ago?

Well, you get the Idea ....
what More can I say?
I'm off to read the Obits ....
like I do every Day.

If my name is not there ....
I'll once again Start -
Perfecting the Art ....
Of Falling Apart!

But til' That Last Curtain ....
Decides to Fall,
I'm gonna' have ....
Myself a Ball!

Ring Out, Wild Bells

Music by Crawford Gates, 1948
 (b. Dec 1921)

Words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850
(6 Aug 1809 - 6 Oct 1892)

  1. Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

2. Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

3. Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

4. Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.
5. Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

6. Ring out false pride in place and blood.
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

7. Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

8. Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
