Parade of the Wooden Soldiers

"All furnish'd, all in arms;
All plumed like estridges that with the wind
Baited like eagles having lately bathed;
Glittering in golden coats, like images;
As full of spirit as the month of May,
And gorgeous as the sun at midsummer;
Wanton as youthful goats, wild as young bulls."

-  William Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part 1 (4.1.101-7)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Is it just me, or do you have a sudden urge to go ride the fabulous Merry-Go-Round at Buckroe once more?!?

54 YEARS AGO TODAY:

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII - 12/26/06 - "Dear Carol, New Years' Prayer.":

Dear Carol,

Here are some reasonable Prayers. I can't see why every one of them is not unreasonable to pray for.

Your Friend, Herbie

A New Years' Prayer.

May you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, your cardiologist, your gastro-enterologist, your urologist, your proctologist, your podiatrist, your psychiatrist, your plumber and the I.R.S.

May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall; and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest not rise.

May New Year's Eve find you seated around the table, together with your beloved family and cherished friends. May you find the food better, the environment quieter, the cost much cheaper, and the pleasure much more fulfilling than anything else you might ordinarily do that night.

May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them. May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.

May the telemarketers wait to make their sales calls until you finish dinner, may the commercials on TV not be louder than the program you have been watching, and may your check book and your budget balance - and include generous amounts for charity.

May you remember to say "I love you" at least once a day to your spouse, your child, your parent, your siblings; but not to your secretary, your nurse, your masseuse, your hairdresser or your tennis instructor.

And may we live in a world at peace and with the awareness of God's love in every sunset, every flower's unfolding petals, every baby's smile, every lover's kiss, and every wonderful, astonishing, miraculous beat of our heart.

Thank you, Herbie Darlin'!  I like these!   Happy New Year!

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 12/27/06:

.....I know this is silly, but I was just really bummed out by the weather & I turned into the Grinch. It was like 70 degrees & raining on Christmas day, all humid & muggy like in the summertime. We had the A.C. blasting because it got so hot inside. That's just wrong. Oh well, it's a little cooler now, more seasonal, so I don't feel too bad.....

You?  The Grinch?!?  Now, David, that's just not possible; you're far too gorgeous.

And of course I know why you were so uncomfortable on Christmas Day.  The weather was unseasonably warm, your home was chock full of your beautiful family, and you are FREAKING HOT!!!

I'm glad you're feeling better now.  Thanks, David Darlin'! Happy New Year!

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII - 12/27/06 and 12/28/06 - "Dear Carol, My Granddaughter's image of me !!!":

Dear Carol,

My Granddaughter got a new camera for Christmas and she wanted to try it out. It's a little dark and it don't show off my BLUE EYES, How Blue are they you ask ?? My Mother always used to say, "They are BLUER than a well digger's BUTT up in the Klondike" !!! ~~~

All my Grand Kids call me "Boompa". It started from the first Grandchild and continues today. I love it !! ~~~

As 2006 draws to a close, Let me be one of the first to wish You and Your Family A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007 !!!

Your Friend, Herbie

That's a great nickname, Herbie - very original!  I love it, too!

  Dear Carol,

My Granddaughter lightened up that picture of me she took on Christmas Day, December 25, 2006. Hang it up in your closet and it will frighten the MICE away.

Your Friend, Herbie

Thanks, Herbie Darlin'!    It's a very handsome image of you!  I  had lightened and brightened the first one when I took it into PhotoShop to enlarge it a bit, but your granddaughter did a better job of it.  Happy New Year!

From Randy Tate ('66) of DE - 12/27/06 - "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year":

Hey Sugar,

First let me wish you the best of the Holiday season and hope it is as warm as it is and has been here.  I am gonna try to give you a call soon and try to put you in touch with a friend of mine who is trying to host and set up a reunion site and hopefully get some advice.

Remember to give yourself a warm hug from us here in Delaware ....

Randy

That will be super cool, Randy Darlin'!  I'm looking forward to talking with you!  And our phone system - which has been down more than it has been functioning for the last two or three weeks - is scheduled to be repaired on Saturday morning, so we might actually be able to be able to communicate!

Now, about your friend.  If he already knows how to set up a website himself, and just wants some guidelines on limits and such matters, I'm good for that.  If he wants to know how to create a web page, I have absolutely no idea, but as it turns out, the Greatest Tech Rep in the World, my #6 son,    Dale (Harty - American School, Il - '02 - of VA), is home from college until January 9, so we're still good to go.

Thanks, Sweetie - and Happy New Year!

From Karen Weinstein Witte ('60) of FL - 12/27/06 :

Carol,

I did watch the Kennedy Center Honors and even Tevo'd it. I just went back and checked the Smokey Robinson segment. I think    Bill (Black - '66 - of GA) is referring to Mary Wells singing "My Guy" and backed up by several girls who do look like cheerleaders. I don't think they were from NNHS. The show was wonderful, though!

A very happy and healthy New Year to all Typhoons and their loved ones.

Karen

AHA!  A definitive answer!  Thanks so much, Karen!  (I'm glad I didn't miss that!)

And, ah, Bill, I suppose you'd better check those meds after all!  WILD GIGGLES!!!

   Happy New Year, Karen!

From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 12/27/06 - "Website":

Parade of the Wooden Soldiers

The toy shop door is locked up tight
And ev'rything is quiet for the night.
When suddenly the clock strikes twelve
The fun's begun.

The dolls are in their best array,
There's going to be a wonderful parade.
" Hark to the drum, oh, here they come,"
Cries ev'ryone.

Hear them all cheering
Now they are nearing
There's the captain stiff as starch

Bayonets flashing
Music is crashing
As the wooden soldiers march

Sabers a-clinking
Soldiers a-winking
At each pretty little maid

Here they come!
Here they come!
Here they come!
Here they come!
Wooden soldiers on parade.
