Ding Dong Merrily on High!

"Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself..."

- Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas," 1976

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

If you were some form of Brit, today you'd be celebrating Boxing Day!  That's gifting, not punching!  Congratulations, one and all!

Today my beautiful six-year-old granddaughter,      Emeline Harty of OH, helped me with the choices for this Newsletter - Christmas carol, Christmas bells, quotation, graphics, and color.  Thanks, Eme!

     From Me ('65) of NC - 12/24/07:

With a house full of delightful company - including five adorable grandchildren ranging in age from ten to two - my time is extraordinarily limited, and my concentration level has dropped to waaay below zero at the moment.  Therefore, I'm saving practically all personal correspondence, as well as anything time consuming (namely images or anything causing me to have to think), for later editions this week.

Thank y'all for your patience and understanding!

Happy Birthday to the rest of our December babies:

27 -   Anita Morgan Becker ('66) of VA; 29 - Roy Tate ('57); 30 - William Gwynn ('57) AND   Ron Miller ('59) of NC AND Sarah Stewart Vance ('69) of VA; 31 - Pat Floyd Pride ('62) of VA AND      Susie Overton Jones ('63) of VA!

Many Happy Returns to you all!

From one of my Famous Marines,  Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater during WWII -  12/23/07 - "Dear Carol / Dimples, all women love Diamonds":

Dear Carol / Dimples
I Remember when my wife was still with me that NOTHING ~~~ BUT NOTHING pleases women more than DIAMONDS.
I thought you would get a CHUCKLE out of this joke. I am still laughing about it.
As Marilyn Monroe always said, "DIAMONDS are a girl's best friend."

My husband, being unhappy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the
other day so he would be able to monitor my moods.  We've discovered
that when I'm in a good mood, it turns green. When I'm in a bad mood, it
leaves a big red mark on his forehead.

Maybe next time he'll buy me a diamond.

Dumb ass.

WILD GIGGLES! Thanks, Herbie Darlin'!    Happy New Year!

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 12/24/07 - FUN":

33 Senators Voted Against English as America 's Official Language on June 6, 2007. On Wed. 6 June 2007 23:35:23 - 0500  Colonel Harry Riley , USA , Ret. wrote:
Your vote against an amendment to the immigration Bill make English America's official language is astounding. On D-Day, no less, when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock, character and principles of America , I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.  I don't much care where you come from.  What your religion is.  Whether you're black, white, or some other color......male or female......Democrat, Republican or Independent....... But I do care when you are a United States Senator representing Citizens of America .......and vote against English as the official language of the United States .
Your vote reflects Betrayal.  Political Surrender.  Violates Your Pledge of Allegiance.  Dishonors historical principle. Rejects Patriotism.  Borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator........ Impeachment.......Recall........Or other appropriate action is warranted or worse.
Four of you voting against English as America 's Official Language are Presidential  Candidates:  Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama.  Four Senators vying to lead America, but won't or don't have the courage to cast a vote in favor of 'English'  as America's Official Language when 91% of American Citizens want English officially designated as our language.  This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as 'political hacks'...... Unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualified to serve as President of the United States .  If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a backlash so stunning it will literally 'rock you out of your panties'......... and preferably totally out of the  United States Senate.  The entire immigration bill is a farce.... your action only confirms this really isn't about America is about self-serving politics. .....despicable at best.  It has been said:
'Never Argue with an Idiot.... They'll drag you down to their level!'

Ding Dong Merrily on High

"Ding Dong Merrily on High" is a secular dance tune that evolved into a Christmas song. The tune first appeared as Bransle l'Officiale in the Orchésographie, a dance book written by Jehan Tabourot (1519-1593). The text was composed by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934), and it was first published in 1924 in his The Cambridge Carol-Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter, And Other Seasons. Woodward took an interest in church bell ringing, which no doubt aided him in writing it. Woodward was the author of several carol books, including 'Songs of Syon' and 'The Cowley carol Book'. The macaronic style is characteristic of Woodward’s delight in archaic poetry. The original tune has been harmonised originally by Charles Wood (composer) and more recently by David Willcocks. The carol is also used by Charlotte Church on her album Dream a Dream, an album which the repertoire is originally Christmas carols

The song is particularly noted for the line

Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

where the sung vowel sound "o" of "Gloria" is fluidly sustained through a lengthy rising and falling melismatic melodic sequence:

Glo-O-o-o-o-o-O-o-o-o-o-o-O-o-o-o-o-o-O-o-o-o-o-o-O-o-o-o-o-o-O-ri-a, Ho-san-na in Ex-cel-sis!

Ding dong! merrily on high in heav'n the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky is riv'n with Angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

E'en so here below, below, let steeple bells be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!" by priest and people sungen.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

Pray you, dutifully prime your Matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime your Evetime Song, ye singers.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

Note: "Swungen" and "Sungen" in the second verse, whilst correct English, are very often rendered into their more modern past-forms of "swung" and "sung" for performance today, which somewhat alters the balance of that verse.
