"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill,
to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

 --  Calvin Coolidge

12/25/06 - NNHS Newsletter

"Don't expect too much of Christmas Day. You can't crowd into it any arrears of unselfishness and kindliness that may have accrued during the past twelve months."

 --  Oren Arnold

"Whatever else be lost among the years, Let us keep Christmas still a shining thing: Whatever doubts assail us, or what fears,
Let us hold close one day, remembering Its poignant meaning for the hearts of men. Let us get back our childlike faith again."

 --  Grace Noll Crowell

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

What a wonderful day!  I hope you're all enjoying it!  It's rainy and yucky here in Fayetteville and there are flash flood warnings out for the entire area, but other than that, it's gloriously beautiful!

The entire communication system seems to be overloaded here in Fayetteville. I would think it was just me, but everyone I know is experiencing the same "interesting" problems. The regular telephones now behave as party lines, with other conversations clearly audible, and cell phones have a mind of their own, and will begin randomly dialing numbers in their memories with no outside help from humans. Doncha love it with the phone rings at 3:15 AM - and there's no one there?!?

My internet has been down more often than it's been up - and almost never coinciding with the times when I can actually get to my computer. But with my #2 son    Brent (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) and his wife and five children here visiting from Joliet, Illinois, and my #6 son    Dale (Harty - American School, IL - '02) home from college, I seem to be the only one who finds that somewhat annoying...

With this combination at work, I am now hopelessly behind on the Newsletters, but all the data is safe, and I'll reconstruct them as quickly as I'm able.  Keep the faith.....

From Mimi Weger Green ('40) of VA - 12/24/06 - "Greetings":

MERRY CHRISTMAS, Y'ALL!!!!
and A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

Thanks so much, Mimi!  And I hope you've been enjoying your holidays as well!

From Linda Lane Lane ('64) of VA - vacationing in Florida - 12/24/06 - "Merry Christmas":

Dearest Carol and family,

Christmas Eve finds me here in warm, humid Florida listening and partially watching the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on TV.  Seeing them reminds me of Christmas in the 1950's when we lived in Idaho Falls. There was no question about having a white Christmas,  the question was how much snow this time?  The first year in that far off state for so many of us from Newport News brought the gift of ice skates.  The city had made a large rink at the end of our housing project.  The difficulty was getting there.  I thought if I could roller skate, ice skating would be a snap.  Coming home, I was crawling, my ankles hurt so bad.    Betty Spain '63' (Uecker - of VA) was lucky to have small rink in her own back yard.  It seems like only yesterday,,,

Do you remember The Broadway department store on Washington Avenue? On the balcony was the most beautiful doll dressed in red velvet playing an organ. My great-aunt took me every year to see her and hear the beautiful Christmas Carols she played. There was actually snow on Christmas Eve one year, as we left the candle light service at Noland Methodist.  Who could ask for more?

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and prayers that the New Year will bring you good health, joy, peace and happiness.  You are the greatest and have always been my true friend.

Love,
Linda
