Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains

(Third Sunday in Advent)

“Somehow, not only for Christmas but all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others Is the joy that comes back to you.
And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing Returns to you glad.”

- John Greenleaf Whittier
(17 Dec 1807 - 7 Sep 1892)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today is the third Sunday in Advent.  The theme song de jour, Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains, is the only major Christmas Carol of which I am aware which was composed by a Latter-day Saint.   John Menzies MacFarlane (13 Oct 1833 - 4 June 1892) was the first postmaster of Toquerville, Utah,.  That was the post office first to be authorized in Utah south of Cedar City.  He was also a surveyor, attorney, judge, teacher and farmer.

Today is also the 199th Birthday of John Greenleaf Whittier; hence, the quotation.  I hope you enjoy them both.

From Mike Sisk ('63) of CA - 12/12/06 - "NNHS Class of 1964 Question":

Carol,

I hope you and your loved ones are well.

I would love to find    Judy Edwards from the Class of '64.  Did you or do you know her?  Her picture is on page 50 of the 1962 Anchor Yearbook and on page 119 of the 1963 Anchor Yearbook.

I can't find anything about her on the Web site.  Does anyone know what became of her?

Judy and her family were neighbors in Stuart Gardens, and Mrs. Edwards was like a mother to me the two years that I lived there and attended NNHS.

Any clues to their whereabouts would be appreciated.

You're amazing!  (It's always sad to read of the passing of our peers, though!)

My two sons, James 11 (6th Grade) and Joseph 7 (2nd Grade) keep me young.  I've got to make sure they marry well, right?  By the way, anybody know where to find a Nintendo Wii?

Best wishes...

Hi, Mike!   Thanks for the images of your two sons; they're adorable!   Joseph looks exactly like you!

As a Stuart Gardens kid myself, I remember Judy quite well, but I've had no contact with her in the past 42 years.  So I sent this to the Man Who Knows All, our Wizard of Wonderment,    Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA.  Here's his response.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 12/12/06:

She never replied to any of the mailings for the 40th Reunion or the 60th Birthday Party, so I cannot verify the mailing address I have for her. That being said, here is what I have:

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 12/15/06 - "Glue Job":

Candy (Hixson Whitley - Ferguson HS - '68) kept after me to fix two of her Christmas ornaments that were broken last year, one of the Wise Men & Daisy Duck (from two different little Christmas scenes she puts up every year). I could never remember to do it and she kept after me, "When are you going to glue those two figures?", over & over.

So, finally, I took them out to the garage & did as I was asked. When I brought them back in & gave them to her, she looked at me as though I was crazy or something.

      Women, go figure.

    David

Well, Sweetie-Pie, I don't know what she could be thinking!  They look perfectly all right to me!  WILD GIGGLES!!!

David, Darlin', you are such a HOOT!!!  Thanks, Gorgeous!    Give Candy my love!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 12/16/06 - "Mary Did You Know...":

Is one of the songs in our cantata which will be sung tomorrow.  Unfortunately I have come down with the creeping crud big time and will be home getting well for my trip to Va. tomorrow.  I could cry a river but it would only make me feel worse.  I am hoping someone at church will video it for me.  We have been practicing the songs for six weeks!

OH, NO!!!  I AM SO VERY SORRY!!!

We went to NY yesterday to Radio City Christmas Show and had dinner with our wonderful daughter, Becky.  I started with this scratchy throat business late in the day but it hit me full blast this morning.

Well, at least you had that fun before the Bad Stuff arrived to thwart your holidays!  But I can sympathize with you more than perhaps most, because I know how you love to sing.  It's bad enough to be sick and to feel crummy, but to miss a performance!  Well, only another singer could catch the full import of that!

Love you lots, thank you for making our year bright with the lights of friendship and joy.  You have given us great treasures, dear lady, and we love you far more than you can know.

    Hugs, jb

Thank you, Jean!  The beauty of that is - it works both ways!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 12/16/06 - "So sorry about Shawn...":

Thank you, Jean.  I'm still rather numb...

..... Another favorite of mine is "Birthday of the King".

Ah, well, now there you have me, Lady!  I will admit to being totally unfamiliar with this one.  But I now have a new favorite - Sally DeFord's "When Mary Sang Her Lullaby".  You may read the lyrics, and hear an mp3, and even print out free sheet music here:

    http://www.defordmusic.com/whenmarysangherlullaby.htm

    When Mary Sang Her Lullaby

Darkness fell o'er Bethlehem at last
And hastened weary travelers to their rest
    The empty streets all silent,
    All silent was the night
All silent 'neath the star of stars aglow with heaven's light

Then Mary sang her lullaby of love
And cradled in her arms the Holy Child
In that poor and lowly place
    Hallowed by his grace
'twas a lullaby to comfort all the world

Darkness fell o'er shepherds in the fields
Till heaven's joyful tidings were revealed
    The angels' song of glory
    Re-echoed o'er the plains
While in a stable, soft and low, a sweeter song remained

For Mary sang her lullaby of love
And cradled in her arms the Holy Child
In that poor and lowly place
    Hallowed by his grace
'twas a lullaby to comfort all the world

When darkness falls and night besets my soul
Her gentle song still sings of brighter hope
    Above the voice of sorrow
    Beyond all bitter tears
Echoes of that lullaby linger through the years

When Mary sang her lullaby of love
And cradled in her arms the Holy Child
In that poor and lowly place
    Hallowed by his grace
'twas a lullaby to comfort all the world

For our worship service this morning, I asked a beautiful young mother with an angelic voice to match to select something to sing for us, and this is what she chose.  There were few dry eyes by the time she finished, and I've been humming it ever since.

And in compiling the program, the "Mary's Lullaby" which    Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) chose for us to sing (bless her heart; she didn't realize I meant we were doing a duet until last night! - GIGGLES!!!) obviously had to come immediately after that number, separated by but one line of narration:

Luke 2: 19 - But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

    Mary's Lullaby

All mine in your loveliness baby, all mine.
All mine in your holiness baby divine.
    Sing on herald angels in chorus sublime;
Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

The wise men are coming to worship their King,
The shepherds are kneeling their homage to bring.
Out yonder the star over Judah will keep.
No harm will befall thee, then sleep baby sleep.

O let me enfold thee, my baby tonight,
While legions are singing in joyous delight.
A new star has risen to hail thee divine,
For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

Away spectered future of sorrow and plight,
Away to the years that must follow tonight.
The pangs of Gethsemane, let them be dim,
The red drops on Calvary, not Lord, for Him!

O let me enfold thee, my baby tonight,
While legions are singing in joyous delight.
A new star has risen to hail thee divine,
For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

    Sing on herald angels in chorus sublime;
Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

But we somehow managed to do it anyway!

I am bemoaning the fact that I will not be going ANYWHERE WITH THIS NASTY COLD...I have been on the phone this afternoon asking people who could possibly tape it for me.  My husband has to usher, which will keep him busy being that is is probably the most crowded Sunday of the year and we get all the annuals...(not nice Jean)...and another technical guru is doing a presentation for the minister...so I am still hoping that someone out there can turn on the tape recorder so I will at least have a recording of it.

Oh, I do hope you were able to find someone, Jean!  I'm so sorry you weren't able to be there and to sing!  That is one of the greatest joys of Christmas!   Get well, Lady - and Merry Christmas!

Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains

Words and Music by John Menzies MacFarlane (1833-1892)

Far, far away on Judea's plains,
    Shepherds of old
    Heard the joyous strains:
Glory to God, Glory to God,
Glory to God in the highest:
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men;
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men!

    Sweet are these strains
    Of redeeming love,
Message of mercy from heaven above:
Glory to God, Glory to God,
Glory to God in the highest:
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men;
    Peace on earth,

    Lord, with the angels
    We too would rejoice,
    Help us to sing with
    The heart and voice:
Glory to God, Glory to God,
Glory to God in the highest:
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men;
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men!

    Hasten the time when,
    From every clime,
    Men shall unite
    In the strains sublime:
Glory to God, Glory to God,
Glory to God in the highest:
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men;
    Peace on earth,
    Good-will to men!
