12/12/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

(Third Sunday in Advent)

“Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?
Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing
of my arms? Do you need anything more? Let nothing else worry you, disturb you.”

- Our Lady of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego (1474 - May 30, 1548)

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important!

Grace was named the September 2010 People's Choice!  We only have 19 more days to vote for Grace!

It only takes about two seconds to cast your allotted daily vote)!!!

Doncha wanna go shopping and spot Grace's image on a bag of dog food and know that YOU played a large part in placing her there?!?

From Jack Nelson ('54) of VA - 12/09/10 (but hiding in my spam folder until 12/11/10) - "QUESTION":

I am Jack Nelson, NNHS Class of 1954, and the brother of    Mary Sue Nelson ('52),   Lloyd Nelson ('61) and    Douglas Nelson ('64).  While I view your website from time to time - and enjoy it very much I don't contribute to the website very much, if at all.
My question is: Do you have a page that is dedicated solely to listing the former NNHS, et al, who have departed this life, providing their date of departure and other brief information?  I tried finding a page but could not.  I am wondering if that would be a good idea so that those who wished to could provide you with the names of those who have passed away - sort of a memorial page.
If you already have such a page, please provide me with the details.
Thank you.
Jack Nelson
P.S. I am always amazed at how you can keep the page going for so long; it must take a tremendous amount of your time.

Thank you, Jack - good to hear from you again! Yes, one of the oldest (and most painful) sections on the site is here, broken down by individual classes):

Some classes are more complete than others; the Class of '54 page needs much more work from me than most. Much of the information is right at my fingertips; I just haven't scanned the images or entered the data.

You're correct; working on the site requires roughly ten hours per day - and I'm still always behind..... And then of course there are weeks such as this one when I've devoted a great deal of time and energy to goofing off!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 12/10/10 - "Dropped?":

Have I disappeared from the NL mailing list? Haven't rec'd a one in awhile and have to be notified by others that they've been sent--whatz up??

    Wayne Honey - "Donberidikalous, Dahlin'!"

I've had interference of one type or another all week. However, I did send a note out to everyone (including you) @ 8:00 PM last night.

Let's see what happens when the next mailing goes out--I know you wouldn't intentionally leave me out of the loop--that's why I wrote in the first place. But, I didn't get anything yesterday or for over a week--strange. Like I said, had it not been for others emailing me about your NL of yesterday, I wouldn't have known. I think the last one I rec'd was the "Hilton Pier" issue and following private exchange among the 3 or 4 of us-- or just after that conversation--it's been awhile.
It's those internet gremlins--I know it is!! Thanks for the info. and I sincerely hope all is as well as it can be with you and family--Merry Christmas.

Well, yes, it could indeed be the gremlins. I'm having enough trouble maintaining control over the html code that I'm posta control.  The announcements must go through my server and your server and who knows where they really go?!?  It just like I always say - the safest way to find anything is to bookmark or just check any one of these three pages to see what's happening, and consider the silly announcements some kind of bonus:

Thanks, Wayne Honey - Merry Christmas to you, too!

Gold, Circumstance and Mud

I was babysitting my four children while my wife had gone shopping. Baby-sitting to me is reading the paper while my wife had gone shopping. Baby-sitting to me is reading the paper while the kids mess up the house. Only that day I wasn't reading. I was fuming…

There was a knock on the door. Then Nancy's voice, "Daddy, we have a play to put on. Would you like to see it?" I didn't. But I have fatherly responsibilities…so I followed her into the living room. Right away I knew it was a Christmas play, for at the foot of the piano stool was a lighted flashlight wrapped in swaddling clothes lying an a shoebox.

Rex, age six, came in wearing my bathrobe and carrying a mop handle. He sat on the stool and looked at the flashlight. Nancy, age ten, draped a sheet over her head, stood behind Rex, and began, "I'm Mary and this boy is Joseph." “Usually in this play Joseph stands up and Mary sits down, but Mary sitting down is taller than Joseph standing up so we thought it looked better this way.”

Enter Trudy, age four, at a full run. There were pillowcases over her arms. She spread them wide and said only "I'm an angel."

Then came Ann, age eight. I knew she was a wise man because she had on her mother's high heels and walked like she was a wise man riding a camel. On a pillow she carried three items, undoubtedly gold, frankincense, and myrrh. She walked across the room and announced, "I'm all three wise men. I bring precious gifts: gold, circumstance, and mud."

That was all. The play was over. I didn't laugh, I prayed. How near the truth Ann was. We come at Christmas burdened down with gold, with the showy gifts and the tinselly tree. Under the circumstance we can do no other. And it really does seem a bit like mud when you think about it. But my children saw through the earthly and found the real reason for Christmas -- to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

From LadyHawke's Weekly Jokes - - 12/12/10:

"Making The Book"

The Smith family was very proud that their ancestors had come over on the Mayflower, so they hired best-selling author Frank McCourt to look up and write a book about their family history.

Horror of horrors!  They discovered that great uncle Fess had died in the electric chair for committing a murder.  They were devastated.

They didn't want that in the book, but they didn't want to leave him out either.

McCourt said, "Leave it to me."

When the book came out, the section about Uncle Fess read like this:

"He was a man who occupied a great seat. He was attached to his position very firmly.  His death came as a great shock."

Alma Redemptoris Mater

Loving Mother of our Savior
Ascribed to Hermannus Contractus, d.1054
Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli
Porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,
Surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,
Natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore
Sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving Mother of our Savior, hear thou thy people's cry
Star of the deep and Portal of the sky!

Mother of Him who thee made from nothing made.
Sinking we strive and call to thee for aid:
Oh, by what joy which Gabriel brought to thee,
Thou Virgin first and last, let us thy mercy see.
