12/09/10 - NNHS Newsletter - O Come, Little Children

“Late on a sleepy, star-spangled night, those angels peeled back the sky
just like you would tear open a sparkling Christmas present. Then, with light
and joy pouring out of Heaven like water through a broken dam, they began
to shout and sing the message that baby Jesus had been born. The world had
a Savior! The angels called it 'Good News,' and it was.”

- Larry Libby, Christmas Stories for the Heart

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is one of those more obscure (to me, anyway) carols I mentioned earlier.

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important!

Grace was named the September 2010 People's Choice!  This is the last month we can vote for Grace - the last 31 days we have to make a difference.

It only takes about two seconds to cast your allotted daily vote)!!!

Doncha wanna go shopping and spot Grace's image on a bag of dog food and know that YOU played a large part in placing her there?!?

From George Helliesen ('61) of MI - 12/08/10 - "Newsletter halp":

Dear Miss Typhoon,
Just wanted to remind your readers that it is that time of year again when we need to provide some financial help for OUR newsletter.  A few years ago you outlined the cost of the website, programs, electricity and other expenses that you incur in publishing, printing, and disseminating the Typhoon newsletter.  And if I remember correctly, your expenses totaled far more than anyone expected and you do not pay yourself for any of the work and time you spend on the newsletter. So you are donating your work, expertise, and time, and we've learned that it takes a lot, free of charge to your readers.  I believe we have been helping every year thereafter to defer some of the expenses from you to us, the readers.  We are very grateful for all the work you do in trying to hold together the Typhoon Nation.  Big job but we have an expert in charge!
As you can see, my contribution is smaller than last year because of the economy, the stock market, and the governmental programs that are going astray for us old folks, but I hope it will help if just a little.  I'm sure that any contribution from your readers will be greatly appreciated to help offset your expenses in publishing.
Thank you my LOVE and may you and Paul have a great Christmas and a Happy 2011.
George Helliesen, 61

Thank you so very much, George! What a Sweetie-Pie you are!

The easiest figure to report would be for the site hosting itself. We switched servers last year from 00freehost to AwardSpace, so the yearly cost for that alone dropped from $149.50 to $95.88 (while providing us with greater services), which will become due again on February 25.

Since we moved out here two years ago, it's become trickier for me to figure out how much the other expenses are, because I just write out a check to my daughter-in-law for $513.00 (roughly half of Paul's monthly Social Security income) on the second Wednesday of each month, much of which I would assume is applied toward the monthly internet, phone, and outrageous electric bills.

And you're so right - any and all contributions are always greatly appreciated!

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - phone call of 12/08/10 - "Obscure Christmas Carols":

I know you like obscure and medieval Christmas carols, and I have three you might not have considered:

Gabriel's Message (sometimes called The Angel Gabriel) - Sting -

A 'Soalin' - Peter, Paul, and Mary -

When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick, Jr. -

Thanks so much, Jean! I've never heard the first and last of these, and whereas I thought I knew the Peter, Paul, and Mary number, I never could make out the words, and had no idea whatsoever it was a Christmas Carol! If pressed I would have entitled it, "I'm Hungry; Feed Me!"  No, waitaminute, that was an old Saturday Night Live skit parodying Admiral Stockdale

As it turns out, I still had one date open on December 27, and that carol is perfect for that day. The other two I'll place in the lineup for next year. Thanks again!

From My Cousin, Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64) of VA - phone message of 12/08/10 - "Mary, Did You Know?":

O Come, Little Children

(Ihr Kinderlein kommet)

Lyrics by Christoph von Schmid, 1798
(15 Aug 1768 - 03 Sept 1854)

Music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz
(31 Mar 1747 - 1800), 1790

Ihr Kinderlein, kommet,
o kommet doch all!
Zur Krippe her kommet
in Bethlehems Stall
und seht, was in dieser
hochheiligen Nacht
der Vater im Himmel
für Freude uns macht!

O seht in der Krippe
im nächtlichen Stall,
seht hier bei des Lichtleins
hell glänzendem Strahl
den reinliche Windeln,
das himmlische Kind,
viel schöner und holder
als Engel es sind!

Da liegt es, das Kindlein,
auf Heu und auf Stroh,
Maria und Josef
betrachten es froh.
Die redlichen Hirten
knien betend davor,
hoch oben schwebt jubelnd
der Engelein Chor.
O beugt wie die Hirten
anbetend die Knie,
erhebet die Hände
und danket wie sie!
Stimmt freudig, ihr Kinder,
wer wollt sich nicht freun,
stimmt freudig zum Jubel
der Engel mit ein!

O betet: Du liebes,
du göttliches Kind,
was leidest du alles
für unsere Sünd!
Ach hier in der Krippe
schon Armut und Not,
am Kreuze dort gar noch
den bitteren Tod.

So nimm unsre Herzen
zum Opfer denn hin;
wir geben sie gerne
mit fröhlichem Sinn.
Ach mache sie heilig
und selig wie Deins
und mach sie auf ewig
mit Deinem nur eins.

Translated from German to English
by Melanie Schulte (1885–1922)

Oh, come, little children,
oh, come, one and all,
To Bethlehem’s stable,
in Bethlehem’s stall.
And see with rejoicing
this glorious sight,
Our Father in heaven
has sent us this night.

Oh, see in the manger,
in hallowèd light
A star throws its beam
on this holiest sight.
In clean swaddling clothes
lies the heavenly Child,
More lovely than angels,
this Baby so mild.

Oh, there lies the Christ Child,
on hay and on straw;
The shepherds are kneeling
before Him with awe.
And Mary and Joseph
smile on Him with love,
While angels are singing
sweet songs from above.

Alternate Translation

O Come, little children;
behold, one and all,
Who lies in the manger
in Bethlehem's stall;
For there, little children,
on this holiest night,
Our God sends from heaven
His Son, your delight.

He lies there, before you,
asleep in the hay,
With Mary and Joseph
to guard Him and pray.
The wondering shepherds
look in at the door,
And seeing the Infant
they kneel and adore.

Adore like the shepherds!
Your glad voices raise
With those of the angels
who sing in His praise.
Your chorus will echo
from earth to the sky,
With 'Glory to God
in His heaven most high.
