12/05/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Sleep, Holy Babe (Second Sunday in Advent) |
||
![]() |
“Advent is concerned with that very
connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man. Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child. This is a healing memory; it brings hope. The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that it can discern the star of hope.… It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.”
- Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
(now Pope
Benedict XVI), Seek That Which Is Above, 1986 |

Sleep, Holy Babe
Lyrics by Fr. Edward Caswall (15 July 1814 - 02 Jan 1878)
Melody adapted from Louise Reichardt (11 Apr 1779 - 17 Nov 1826), 1826
Sleep, Holy Babe,
Upon Thy Mother's breast.
Great Lord of earth and sea and sky,
How sweet it is to see Thee lie
In such a place of rest.
Sleep, Holy Babe, Thine angels watch around;
All bending low with folded wings
Before th'Incarnate King of kings,
In rev'rent awe profound.
Sleep, Holy Babe, While I with Mary gaze
In joy upon Thy face awhile,
Upon the loving Infant smile,
Which there divinely plays.
Sleep, Holy Babe, O take Thy brief repose!
Too quickly will Thy slumbers break,
And Thou to lengthen'd pains awake,
That death alone shall close.
