Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
If the sounds and images on today's Newsletter seem a trifle familiar to you, there's a good reason:

But, hey, this
was the next song up from
Dave Spriggs' ('64 - of VA) wonderful
Reunion CD's!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 11/19/05 - "
Chandler (Nelms - Hampton HS
- '63 - of MD) can look at me anytime...":
But of course he would have to come to RI, which is
not exactly a tourist attraction in the winter...we are into our winter
clothing now...which will continue until the end of May! I only dated
three guys in our class... and probably not more than ten in my entire
life! In fact, I can only think of 8! Of course,
![]() Ohhh, y'all just think I'm gonna comment on this one and draw the noose even tighter around my own neck, doncha?!? WILDEST GIGGLES!!! No, no, I'm going to gingerly sidestep this whole dating/secret loves and crushes story! Sometimes I'm not quite as dumb as I look! Thanks, Jean! Stay warm! http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-29-05-NNHS-Love-Me-Do.html - a. k. a. 11/16/05 - She Loves You http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/11-19-05-NNHS-Never-My-Love.html |
From Henry Hoyle ('65) of Northern VA - 11/19/05 - "Cousins from way, way back":
Well, Cousin Henry, I must say I am astonished. Astonished, but undeterred....... Let's just take Peter Heyl back to Germany: Peter or Pieter Hoyle or
Heyl (14 May 1710, Wiesbaden, Hesse - 1 Nov 1781, Lincoln {now Gaston} Co.,
NC) Surely we connect somewhere. But I am shocked to learn that all the NC are not necessarily that closely related. There's another youthful illusion shattered. Thanks for the
enlightenment, Cousin Henry! (Hey, y'all already knew how
hard-headed I am!) |
From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 11/19/05:
From Aretie Gallins Patterson ('59) of Northern
VA - 11/19/05:
Carol,
I keep getting mixed up as to which e-mail
address to use. Is it yahoo.com or nc.rr.com. Does it matter which one I
use?
Well, yes and no. For the moment, I'd prefer
that everyone use the
NNHS65@yahoo.com addy.
Once I reclaim the full use of my road runner account (which I'm sure
won't be for another couple of months), I will ask that everyone return to
using the
NNHS65@nc.rr.com account, which now
only has partial accesability. Then we can all enjoy watching
everyone line up to shoot me. ("Make up your so-called mind,
Lady!!!") Just remember, that'll be on a first come, first
served basis. Once I'm dead, it will profit you nothing to keep
firing.
The buildings

The restaurant was not exactly a 5 stars
either. It catered to the shipyard
breakfast and lunch crowds. It was built, owned, and operated by my
father, Jimmy Gallins, and his partners, after he sold the
Sanitary Lunch downtown on Washington Avenue across from the
James Theater.
Well, at last I made a couple of
new pages:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/OOSG-C-G.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/colony-restaurant.html - brand new page and: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/old-stomping.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/OOSG-S-Z.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/sanitary-restaurant.html - brand new page
and And that triggered me to recall the restaurant
in the basement on the southwest corner of 50th and Huntington:
The Ventura Grill. Well, of course it was - SHEESH!!! I forgot all about those pages! My mind must be more stressed and stretched than I thought! Thanks, David! I'll make a Ventura Grill page soon. We're making some progress, anyway....
I may be able to provide some
information about the restaurant in the basement of the house at 50th and
Huntington, but I need to make a couple of phone calls first to make sure
I'm right. If it belonged to who I think it did, I don't think the
daughter's name was Betty. Of course, someone else may get to you
with the information before I get back to you.
I enjoyed the picture of

Some have written about the kids from
Newmarket or Briarfield or the North End.
There were a group of us who lived downtown and walked to
Daniel School for elementary grades
and then later to NNHS.
I enjoyed the pictures that ![]() That will be super, thanks! Obviously, I'm still waaay behind, so there's no rush. It's strange that you should mention Senior Assembly, as that will be our next new link. The idea just came to me when I saw those great images of Chip's, and remembered a few other items I had in that department.
I'd like to add our thanks, too, for your
dedication to the website, to the cause of
keeping alive our memories and the ties we forged with each other at the
best school there ever was, NNHS.
Thank you so very much,
Aretie! I really appreciate your words. |

Paul Burton was Class of ’60. Retired as City Attorney for Hampton,
I believe.
Fred Bowen
Thanks, Fred! It's nice to find backup!
From Bob Parrish ('68) of VA - 11/19/05:
I saw your list of
Famous
Marines and thought I could add a couple of people.
Hugh O'Brien - He was the actor that
played Wyatt Earp on television in the late 50s and early 60s. He
was also in many movies and on Broadway. He was the youngest drill
sergeant ever in the Marine Corps. He's 80 years old.
Hmmmm - I don't seem to have him - thanks, Bob! I'll add him soon.
Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson's side
kick, was a Marine, as was Drew Carey.
Those two I had, but thanks!
And of course a couple of Typhoons were in the
Corps: Tony Koskinas (Class of 68) lives in NC, Jerry Hicks
(Class of 68) deceased.
If you have a famous Navy list, Johnny
Carson was in the Navy so was Montel Williams. I was a Naval
Reservist, as was Henry Liverman (Class of 68) of VA.
We do indeed: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/famous-sailors.html I've not yet added Johnny Carson, but Montel Williams, while a 1980 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, actually served in the Marine Corps:
Thomas Keithley (Class of 68) of
VA, served in the Army.
Jimmy Cutler (Class of 68) was a
pilot in the Air Force.
I know there are many others from NNHS
that served their country. If I can dig up anymore names I'll send them to
you.
Oh, there are indeed a great many! I'll try to add those names you've given me as soon as I can to those already posted. Thanks, Bob!
Thanks so much for all of the work you do on
these newsletters. It really
makes my day when I see a new one on my e-mail.
Bob Parrish (68)
And you just made mine, Bobby!
Thanks! |
From Me ('65) of NC - 11/19/05 and 11/20/05:
I came across a picture of a vintage skate box from Skateland, so I attached it to the that page:

I also added an old ad to the Cofer Motor Sales page:

From Joe Wingo ('65) of NC - 11/20/05:
Dearest Carol --- Sitting here on a quiet Sunday morning and reading all the comments from and all the names of the "Briarfield Gang" brought back a flood of great memories so I had to write to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. How vividly I remember getting in the "right frame of mind" for our big game with the hated Crabbers on Thanksgiving Day. And what an event that was! Going through the Briarfield page, I was reminded yet again of the tremendous pool of talented folks that graced the halls of NNHS over the years, not just from Briarfield but from all across Newport News. Replicating the history we have as a group will be difficult, if not impossible, to do in today's world and that leaves a generation missing the tremendous memory bank all of us can make withdrawals from and to which we have each made deposits to. You are all wonderful, special people. May all God's goodness flow down upon each of you and your loved ones during this holiday season and forever. Boom on Boomers....You're the Greatest---- With
sincere fondness, Hi there, Sweetie! It's always such a delight to hear from you! (For those of you who weren't in NNHS at the right moment, Joe was co-captain of our Typhoon football team. Of course, had I ever made those Football pages, you'd know these things.........)
I loved your banking analogies, Joe - very appropriate! Have
a great Thanksgiving yourself! |
From Ed Nichols ('62) of Northern VA - 11/20/05:
Hi Carol.
I want to echo my classmate's, ![]() Thank you, Ed! It is a little exhausting at times - now, for instance - GIGGLES!!! I have seen some inquiries on ![]() ![]() I have a ![]() He is that! We'll look forward to your story, Eddie!
Keep up the great work.
Ed Nichols,
Class of 62
Thanks again, Ed!
It was good to hear from you again! |
From Kathy Pilgrim Clark ('63) of VA - 11/21/05 - "If I die before you wake":
Carol,
This is the most poignant thing I have seen in tribute to our troops. The song is a country style song (which is now my favorite genre of music) but the pictures are the most unique I have seen. They really show the soldiers' life while deployed. And the whole thing is so positive. Maybe you can place a link in a newsletter so others can view it (I have no idea how to make a link or how you do all the things you do with the newsletter!) But I know I'm not alone in being thankful. KC Thank you so much, Kathy! It's a power point show, and I've no clue as how to insert the link, but I may be able to locate one elsewhere. I'll keep searching. I'd seen this before, and I must concur with you; it is quite touching. My eyes were already swollen as I viewed it. I had decided to take a rare break from the computer and have some lunch. I had been making a big crock pot full of chicken soup which seemed to be a good idea on this cold and rainy day. I sat down to watch a bit of telly as I did, and on a whim flipped onto the Ovation channel. They were broadcasting an introduction to "Madama Butterfly", my very favorite opera. It was a 2003 production staged for the Puccini Festival at the composer's lakeside hometown of Torre del Lago in Tuscany. I tuned in just in time for the incomparable "Un Bel Di", which has never failed to make me sob, and seems only to do so more easily with the passing of time. |
I'm going to close this Newsletter now, and work on the massive Backlogs
next time (there's always a "next time", right???) - including some more Reunion pictures from ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Y'all take care of each other! And drive safely! TYPHOONS FOREVER!
Love to all, Carol

Dead Man's Curve
- Christian/Berry/Kornfeld/Wilson
(Jan and Dean)
I was cruisin'
in my Stingray late one night
When an XKE pulled up on the right
And rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag
And challenged me then and there to a drag
I said, "you're on, buddy, my mill's runnin' fine
Let's come off the line, now, at Sunset and Vine
But I'll go you one better if you've got the nerve
Let's race all the way
To Dead Man's Curve"
Dead Man's
Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve, you must keep away
Dead Man's Curve, I can hear 'em say:
"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"
The street was
deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine
I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights
And all the Jag could see were my six taillights
He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve
But I pulled her out and there we were
At Dead Man's Curve
Dead Man's
Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve
Well - the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right
