11/20/07 - NNHS Newsletter -
Now Thank We All Our God

“Thanksgiving comes to us out of the prehistoric dimness, universal to all ages and all faiths.
At whatever straws we must grasp, there is always a time for gratitude and new beginnings.”

-  J. Robert Moskin

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I trust your Thanksgiving plans, whatever they may be, are proceeding nicely and on schedule, and that you're able to remember amidst all the preparations why we're celebrating.

NEWBIES:

1.   Sydney Dearing ('56) of VA - 11/19/07 - "Mailing List":

Hi Carol,

Please add me to your mailing list for the newsletter and add me to the Hallways of NNHS: Where Friends Meet, Class of 1956 page.

Thanks,
Sydney Dearing
NNHS Class of 1956

Thanks for joining us, Sydney! I remember seeing you in a high school play or two forty-eleven years ago.

I've added your name and senior portrait to your alumni page, as well as your address to my mailing list.  As a matter of privacy, I'll not post your email addie unless you authorize me to do so.  You'll notice that I've assumed that you still reside on the Sacred Soil of Virginia.  If that is not the Reality of Life, let me know, and I'll "move" you.  If you'll tell me your birthday, we won't miss celebrating it with you.

DOG HOUSE PUZZLE

Just put the puzzle together. Then, wait a few seconds for the dog to come out! This is probably one of the cutest things you'll see all day!

   AWW!!! Thanks, Shari!

    From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 11/18/07 - "Lowe's Christmas Goof-Up":

We seem to have become a country obsessed with being so politically correct that it has become almost laughable, at times...a prime example.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/christmas/familytree.asp

   YOWZERONI, already! Thanks again, Shari!

From My #5 Son, Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL- '97) - 11/18/07 - "Kitten pictures":

I just uploaded a few pictures to my blog.  Sorry it took so long.

http://bftdlister.wordpress.com/

Thanks for posting those images, Faniel! That is one cute little Himalayan ball of fluff! Y'all have fun with all four of your kitty-cats - and Happy Thanksgiving!

From Bill Gross ('48) of VA - 11/19/07, 1:17 PM - "Ethel Neofitou":

I noticed with interest that in your 11/19/07 Newsletter that Ethel Neofitou was listed as in the 1949 Anchor.  She was a graduate of the February class of 1948 and she is pictured in the Anchor of 1948.  It would be of interest to me if she is still living.  I am chairman of our 60th Reunion slated for June of 2008 and I would like to update my records.

Thanks,

Bill Gross wc144@juno.com

I've passed this on to our Wizard of Wonderment, and we should know something soon, Bill!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 11/19/07, 2:54 PM and  6:04 PM - "RE: Ethel Neofitou":

My Bad!!!   Indeed she was a graduate of February 1948. I really do need to turn on more lights when I am doing this kinda stuff.

Now .... is she living? Assuming that she married and now has another surname, the only way to find her is to locate the obituaries of her parents and hope that she is listed as a survivor by her married name.

I am on the job.

Aye, aye, Captain! Nobody does it better! Thanks!

Sorry this took so long.

John Neofitou's obituary stated that he was survived by a daughter, Ethel Kanelos of Newport News.

The 2007 Verizon telephone directory AND the on-line white pages both have the following listings:

Ethel N Kanelos

696 Winthrop Rd
Williamsburg, VA 23185-4742
(757) 220-0610

Frank G & Helen K Kanelos

113 Crownpoint Rd
Williamsburg, VA 23185-4417
(757) 229-5312

I am guessing that Ethel is widowed and lives alone. Frank may be a son, married to Helen ?? and also living in Williamsburg.

Bill, for the price of a phone call, you can sort it all out.

Dave Spriggs NNHS 1964

Took so long?!? David, you Super Sleuth, that was faster than a speeding bullet! Thanks so much!

From Bill Gross ('48) of VA - 11/19/07, 8:59 PM - "Ethel Neofitou":

Thanks Dave.

I appreciate all your information. I will check it out. I was led to believe that Ethel had died. Now I have something to go on.

Bill

From Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC - 11/19/07 - "Your Foot":

Carol.....

How many times have I told you to quit kicking around ideas and to just put them in the Newsletter ?   See there, now you have hurt your dainty little foot, oh, wait !  You've been trying to get your foot into that Glass Slipper again haven't you ?  I've told you before and I'll tell you again~~~~~~that pair was made for a gal from a Fairy Tale that uses a broom to sweep the fireplace hearth.  She had two mean step-sisters, you have one good sister.  Stop with the shoe thing, besides no one wears glass shoes to
Arby's on Thanksgiving !  Now the "Golden Growl" ? That's a 'step up', but remember........No Glass Shoes after Labor Day, not in the South anyway !  So just put on your "scuffs" and go eat somewhere, already !! And be Thankful no matter where you go.

I'm Thankful for all of God's gifts, but this year my special gift is, NO COOKING, Reuben has to work and he will be well fed there, as for myself I'm going to celebrate Thanksgiving Day and Robe Day together.  Robe Day is when I don't have to get out of my robe and can curl up and start a new book, for that I give thanks, those days are rare.

Wishing you and the entire TYPHOON FAMILY~~~~~~~HAPPY THANKSGIVING !  Y'all !

Dimples a.k.a. Sepi

GIGGLES!!!  When I was a little girl my parents bought me a Cinderella watch which rested each night by my bed in its own "Glass" Slipper (okay, it was really clear plastic).  It was my favorite gift that year!

This year, it seems that once again I am not going to be able to weasel out of the cooking.  It's just as well; my conscience would probably torment me eternally if I did. So I'll cook and bake practically everything I usually do, and be thankful that I still can.

   Happy Thanksgiving Robe Day, Dimples!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 11/19/07 - "Fabian":

Not only is he STILL HOT but he sang his one and only hit "Like a Tiger"...he explained that he and Bobby Rydell and Brian Hyland all lived very close to American Bandstand so if a performer could not make it they got called at the last minute to fill in...that explains how they all got their start on American Bandstand...it was a great show, full of wonderful nostalgic tunes from the heyday of rock and roll.

I think you should go to        Eleanor's (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) and skip the cooking this year!!!  There will be opportunities I AM SURE in the future for big cooking.  I have cleaned the living room and dining room and done the food shopping.  I think that is enough for one day...I will put police tape around the stairs leading to the second floor and shoot anyone who tries to go up!!!  That is where I will put piling up all the crap and clutter from the downstairs!!! Oh come on, I am not the ONLY one who does this...all over America people are shoveling their clutter from one part of the house to another...I feel sorry for the turkeys...

WILDER GIGGLES!!!  So, Jean, we actually are twins separated at birth, right?!? And either way, I'll be cooking and baking.  I'm actually quite good at it; I just think it's a waste of time because it doesn't last Throughout the Ages as a grand monument to my time and effort - and besides, it makes me fat. :o(

    Happy Thanksgiving, Lady!

From Gail Kiger Bonsey (Ferguson HS - '73) of OR - 11/19/07 - "Sky King":

Hi Carol!

Remember Sky King?  The series and adventures of pilot Sky King and his niece, Penny?  Well, I do, vaguely.  I thought it was funny that my husband, who loves to fly & was raised in Hawaii, never saw it and he came across some free stream links, no download needed, of all the episodes, so am sending them to the web page!

http://www.americanflyers.net/entertainment/skyking.asp

WOWZERONI-RINI! Sky King! I watched it faithfully every Saturday! Thanks so much, Gail!  I've added this to our television page (all the way down to the bottom):

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 11/19/07:

Thanksgiving plans here:

Let's see-- 7 reconstructionist Druids, 2 agnostics, one conservative Jew, 2 conservative Christians coming to dinner for sure; three others invited who haven't confirmed.

Appetizers: little  spiced steak bits on toothpicks, scallops in bacon, artichoke hearts with curry mayonnaise, little triangles of spanokapita, mixed salted nuts, kosher mini beef franks in pastry, smoked salmon with little pieces of rye bread and onions and capers, Cabot seriously sharp cheddar....
Tossed green salad; choice of balsamic dressing, Ranch, or Caesar; grated Italian cheeses to pass; homemade crescent rolls and herb bread...
Turkey, of course, though I'd rather have duck or goose most of the others don't agree.
Still debating what kind of meat to roast; we do the traditional Irish "fish, flesh and fowl".  Lots of options in the freezer.
Mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, gravy, yellow rice, bread stuffing and cornbread stuffing; maybe French-Canadian pork stuffing (sauteed ground pork, potatoes and onions finely chopped; lots of salt, pepper and nutmeg...)
Freshly made cranberry sauce, sweet gerkins, black olives...
Afterwards pie, ice cream roll, fresh apples, nuts to munch...
White and red wine, white and red sparkling grape juice, pomegranate juice,  selzer, diet and regular sodas, herb and regular tea...
Expect Monopoly and Scrabble games, and chess, after...
and some Celtic music or maybe  the Blackmore's Night DVD in the background...
Not an adventurous menu, but quite nice...
Domi

Not adventurous?!? I suppose that would depend on your perspective; I personally have never sampled a large percentage of the foods you mentioned!

Thanks for sharing your plans with us, Domi - enjoy your friends and feast!

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 11/19/07 - "Two Birthdays":

Webdoll,

Friday, Nov. 23rd we will celebrate my mother Mary E. Goodson Covert's ('37) of Md., birthday. I know this because Monday Nov. 26th is my baby sister Fayetta Covert Stansbury's (Ferguson HS '72) of Fla., birthday. I can do the arithmetic from 1919 and 1954, respectively. For the benefit of the Class of '37, Mother pulled out her class banner to prove she's been a Typhoon a pretty good while. I attach the image forthwith. Once the turkey has made its sacrifice, we'll bring on the lighted candles and celebrate.

Norm Covert ('61)

Thanks for sharing this treasure with us, Norm! I've added your mother and sister to our birthday page, and I posted your mama's senior pennant on our Odds and Ends page:

Now Thank We All Our God

Based on Ecclesiasticus 50:22-24 by Martin Rinkart (1586-1649)

Translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878)

Music: Johann Crüger (1598-1662); Harmony by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Now thank we all our God,
With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mothers' arms
Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us still in grace,
And guide us when perplexed;
And free us from all ills,
In this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given;
The Son, and him who reigns
With them in highest heaven;
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.
