THIS DAY IN WWII:

November 16, 1940 - In response to the leveling of Coventry, England by Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe two days before, the Royal Air Force bombed Hamburg. Due to bad weather the accuracy of the attack was minimal and 233 German civilians were killed. By the end of the war, the total death toll in Hamburg from British attacks was near 50,000.

November 16, 1940 - Holocaust: in occupied Poland, the Nazis closed off the Warsaw Ghetto from the outside world.

November 16, 1943 - American bombers struke a hydro-electric power facility and heavy water factory in German-controlled Vemork, Norway. 160 bombers were used in the attack.

November 16, 1944 - Dueren, Germany was destroyed by Allied bombers.

November 16, 1945 - Cold War: Operation Paperclip – the United States Army secretly admited 88 German scientists and engineers to help in the development of rocket technology.

NNHS Class of 1958 Holiday Gathering and Dinner Wednesday, December 15, 2010 Al Fresco Ristorante 11710 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA, 23606 (between J. Clyde Morris Blvd. & Pilot House Drive) The Restaurant is in the Oyster Point Square Shopping center. NOTE: Al Fresco is considered by many to be the finest Italian restaurant on the Peninsula, and it is very reasonably priced. Please let Joe Drewry know how many will be in your party so the restaurant will have an estimate of the number of guests to prepare for.
