11/08/06 - NNHS Newsletter -

Wouldn't It Be Nice?

"How did it happen that their lips came together?
How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts,
that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind
the stark shapes of trees on the quivering summit
of the hill? A kiss, and all was said."

- Victor Hugo
( 26 Feb 1803 - 22 May 1885)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Wait a minute, wait a minute.  "Wouldn't it be nice if we were older?"  No, no, that isn't what I was thinking at all!!!  Not at all.  Sigh.......

From Me ('65) of NC - 11/08/06 - "Our Graduations":

Last night as I was searching through my files to find a divider line clip art I thought would work for this Newsletter, I spotted this little pinky rose squiggle heart design, which I had saved back on 03/24/05.  When I opened that file to find the source so I could list it in today's credits, I found this Newsletter:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/03-25-05-NNHS-Angel-Baby.html

WOW!  The Newsletters looked entirely different back then, didn't they?

Anyway, halfway down the page I found long discourses by    Aretie Gallins Patterson ('59) of Northern VA and me relative to our respective graduations.  This section didn't exist at that time, so the comments were posted elsewhere.  I thought they belonged to be here as well, so now they are:

BIRTHDAYS - TODAY AND UPCOMING:

As mentioned yesterday, today is the birthday of   Joe Madagan ('57) of FL, Lawson (Buddy) Sparrow ('53) of VA, and Woody Hudson ('57).  And tomorrow is Hilton Henderson's  ('57) big day.

   Happy Birthday, Gentlemen!

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Happy-Birthday.html

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 11/07/06 - "Thanks for the Birthday
greeting":

Hi, Carol:

Thanks for the Birthday greeting in the Newsletter for this mid-term election day!

My oldest sister,    Mary Ann Madagan Franzyshen ('56) of VA showered me with a most wonderful gift and I wanted to share it with you and    Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA) in case you are not aware of the book entitled: "Newport News, A Vintage Postcard Tour" By Harold Cones and John Bryant, A Schiffer Book. ISBN: 0-7643-2405-5.

Apparently the article in The Daily Press announcing the release of this book created quite a demand, for Barnes and Noble Booksellers had sold out. But just in case the TYPHOON subscribers who do not receive The Daily Press might like to check out this book I wanted to share it with them.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

WOWZERONI-RINI!!!   I've seen the beautiful postcard chosen for the cover many times on eBay, but I was not aware of the existence of such a book!  That's fabulous!  Congratulations, Adonis!  And again, Happy Birthday!

From Mark Friedman ('65) of VA - 11/07/06 - "HOW TO CLEAN THE HOUSE":

I've done this many times but I don't think it's working too well....

HOW TO CLEAN THE HOUSE

HOW TO CLEAN THE HOUSE

1. Open a new file on your PC .
2. Name it "Housework."
3. Send it to the
RECYCLE BIN.
4. Empty the
RECYCLE BIN.
5. Your
PC will ask you, "Are you sure you want to delete Housework permanently?"
6. Calmly answer, "Yes," and press mouse button firmly......
7. Feel better?
Works for me!

WILD GIGGLES!!!  But it sounds like such a good plan!

   Thanks, Mark!

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 11/07/06:

Did you get my message about Johnny  (NNHS ’61) Holland ’s wife, Gwen Howard (WHS ’61)?  She had a stroke several weeks ago and now in Riverside Rehab.  She’s doing better but will a long recovery.  Talked to their son the other night.  Thanks. Please post.

Um, yes, ma'am, I did receive your note, but as I tend to get myself in deep water faster by publishing health issues than by any other known means - including politics and religion - I, the Wienius Maximus, still stinging from my last foray into such waters, elected instead to forward your note to a few interested parties.

Email being what it is today, the message was promptly returned to me in most cases.  I took that as an Omen to Lay Low, but buoyed by your concern, I shall indeed post it now, phone number and all.

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 10/26/06:

Carol,

Just found out the Johnny Holland’s (NNHS ’61) wife, Gwen Holland (WHS ’61) had a stoke Sunday, 22 Oct.  She is now in the ICU unit of Riverside Hospital .  Spoke to their son last night and she is improving some but long haul.  If you need to call and get more info, Johnny’s number is 595-3774.

Karrin Williams Frankie

WHS ’61 (& would have been class of NNHS ’61 if not moved!!)

We are so sorry to hear this news, Karrin.  Please keep us posted.

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA to the Members of the Class of 1958 - 11/07/06 - "NNHS 1958
Holiday Dinner ???":

There have been no plans made for a Holiday gathering as yet.  A couple of people recently asked whether one would be held.  There has also been a request that it be held on a Friday or Saturday night.

Does anyone want to find a place?  At this point, most of the potential venues I am familiar with are booked for the Holiday season.  It is especially difficult to book for a group on the weekend.

We have generally had about 25 in our group and that is a difficult size to book.

I suggest anyone who wants to run with this let me know and I'm sure our Treasurer can advance a deposit.

Email me if you can make it happen.

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA to the Members of the Class of 1958 - 11/08/06 - "NNHS 1958
HOLIDAY DINNER UPDATE !!!":

Thanks to Allan Willey, our Holiday get together may be a go!

Save the Date:  Saturday, December 9th
Place: Kitchen at Powhatan Plantation

We will shortly provide information on making reservations.  Their ability to handle large parties is limited, so we will probably not be able to handle more than 20-25 people.

We are not sure how we will handle the billing yet.  It may be a case of ordering from the menu and you having the cash available to pay into the pool at the dinner.  I do not think they will split the bill for a group.

It will be helpful if you let me know if you will or will not be interested in joining us that evening.

Go to their website to check menu, prices, and driving directions.  Note that there will be a 20% gratuity added to each dinner bill.

From Me ('65) of NC to the Members of the Class of 1967 - 10/08/06 - "REUNION?!?":

Speaking of Reunions, we have heard nothing from the Class of 1967 regarding your 40-Year Reunion.  If anyone has any information, please let us help you publicize it!  Thanks!

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 11/08/06:

..... Alas, I am too, also, not, an artist, although I prefer to be referred to as also not an "arteest" (I just like the way that thing that I'm not, is pronounced better than that other thing that I'm also not, is pronounced. I think)......

..... yours, Dave (or my street name, "T-Bone Papa-D")

David, you gorgeous goofy man, I so beg to differ with you.  You are one of the most gifted artists (or arteests, if you will) I know, and I have evidence to prove it.  But thank you for your delightfully outrageous nonsensical letter which repeatedly knocked me off my chair, due to my excessive uncontrollable loud laughter.

Oh, yes, the evidence.  That will be in tomorrow's Bonus Edition.

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90 - of IL) - 11/08/06 - "Election Day
Newsletter":

Nice stuff, Mom...

I enjoyed    Fan's (Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97 - of IL) letter,   Mary's (Bennett Harty - Litchfield HS, IL - '89 - of IL) test and Shari's (of VA) quotes.

Love you! bh

Thanks, Brent!  I got a big kick out of all that as well!  Love you, too!

BACKLOGS:

This is a selection of fairly recent items which have taken me way too long to post for a variety of reasons which no one wants to hear....

My own favorite beer is root beer!  In fact, my very favorite beer is a diet root beer which they serve at Cracker Barrel!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA via snail mail - 11/01/06 - "Football history":

Carol.

Maybe you can find a way to increase the print, or send this to   Gloria Woolard Price (Hampton HS - '65 - of FL).

You and yours are still in my prayers - Hope things are improving.

Jerry

Thanks so much, Jerry!  I really appreciate your going to all that trouble for us!

The good news is that I took your Xerox copies and rescanned them, and I think they are much  clearer now than they were when we first posted them:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-21-06-NNHS-Ill-Never-Stop-Loving-You.html

Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 1990

The better news is that I have posted them on the Football page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/SITE-MAP.html

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/FOOTBALL.html

The bad news is that our financial situation has not improved, nor does it seem to be headed in that direction in time to save my pudgy neck by next week.

Everything is paid and caught up through the end of November, except for $440.00 which must be paid on 11/15/06.  Of that I have $40.00, plus enough gas money to get us around.

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII - 10/29
/06 - "Dear Carol, Awarding of Purple Heart Medals":

Dear Carol,

Looking over old pictures I thought you might be interested in this one. I don't know if I sent you this picture before, but this is awarding of Purple Heart Medals to The Marines of M.A.G. 31 (Marine Aircraft Group 31) that were wounded in the Air Raid on Roi-Namur, (Marshall Islands, Pacific Theatre) Feb 12th 1944.

That's me on the far left. The Colonel that made the awards was very sarcastic with his remarks. He was a Fighter Pilot, and he felt a Marine that was awarded the Purple Heart should have limbs missing or, On a stretcher or, In a wheel chair. Anyhow, I can still remember his remarks today after 62 years. I remember the Ceremony like it was yesterday. The upper left portion of the picture shows our tents, 4 men to a tent. More pictures of interest to follow.

  1944

Your Friend, Herbie

Herbie Darlin', every now and then you send me something that leaves me simply speechless.  This one comes as a double-doozy.

I don't know exactly why I had never assimilated the fact that you had a purple heart before; it's probably been staring me in the face all the time.

And I just spilled blood all over my keyboard from biting my tongue in reaction to that colonel's attitude.

Ummm, the beautiful words of gratitude which I should be inserting here have all left my brain.  I couldn't see through my tears to post them anyway.

Later when these conditions of mine have lifted somewhat, I'll add this image - and a Purple Heart - to your spot on Famous Marines:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/famous-marines-G-L.html

Meanwhile, Herbie Darlin', thank you.  I'm deeply honored to know you, and to call you my friend.  Semper Fi!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA to the Class of 1964 - 10/15/06 - "NNHS 60TH
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION":

Fellow Classmates.

I wanted to thank all of you for attending our Birthday Celebration. I hope that you had a memorable evening.

I also hope that you took lots of candid photos of your classmates, of Ms. Kanter ... and of "THE KING".

I know that those who could not attend (and other NNHS classes) would love to see all of your photos. The best way to make that happen is to let Carol Buckley Harty ('65 - of NC) place them on the NNHS Web Page.  And, the best way to do that is to send them all to me, so that I can archive them to my hard drive before sending them along to Carol.

You can attach them to e-mails, if you wish, but I can handle any media.

For e-mails, send them to:  nnhs64@cox.net

For "snail mail" send them to:    NNHS CLASS OF 1964, P.O. BOX 6387, Norfolk VA 23508-0387

It was great seeing all of you.

THIS JUST IN:

..... I seem to be losing whatever paltry hermiting skills I had.  I was called away from home again this evening, and when I returned I found this incredible note:

From George Helliesen ('61) of MI - 11/06/06 - "Surprise":

Dear Carol,

It was with great surprise that I saw my picture in your newsletter for the second straight day, with a story about the girl who needed help and found it at a gas station.  I had read that story about a year or so earlier, but knew I hadn't sent it to you.  A mystery had developed and I didn't know how you got the story, so I started looking around and initially went to my wife and asked her if she knew anything about it.  She said that, "she might have sent it".  Remember, when you get as old as we are you can only recall your name every other day.  On the off days we just try and remember what we did the prior day.  What fun!  Anyway, Mary convinced me that she had in fact sent it and hoped that I wasn't disappointed.  I told her of course not, so you may get more info from her.  She also reads and likes your newsletter and knows many of my classmates from NNHS even though she's from Michigan.  She's a good lady!

I'm going to put a Thanksgiving Day turkey with trimmings in the mail to you tomorrow.  Hope it doesn't stink too much when you get it.  It's for you and your family,

Happy Thanksgiving to the Harty family!!

George Helliesen

Oh, my!  I do believe I have stopped crying off and on today for one reason or another just in time to start crying again.

Thank you so very much, George - and Mary!

(I think the tears seem to be washing all my good and proper responses off with them.  I'll try again tomorrow to answer this properly.....)

  From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 11/08/06 - "Friends" (#1 in a series of 17):

YOWZERONI, Sweetie, that is one big dog!!!
Thanks, Gorgeous!

Friends come in all sizes....

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 11/08/06 - "BEWARE of Wild Animals": (#1
in a series of 18):

Carol,

Look at one a day to brighten your day,

Jerry Blanchard (Class 62) of Va.

Thanks, Jerry! You know I have a special place in my heart for cute little babies!

Y'all take care of each other!  TYPHOONS FOREVER!  We'll Always Have Buckroe!

Wouldn't It Be Nice

- Brian Wilson

(The Beach Boys)

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong

You know its gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together

Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through

The happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Oh, wouldn't it be nice

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true (run, run, run)
Baby, then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do
We could be married (we could be married)
And then we'd be happy (then we'd be happy)

Wouldn't it be nice (ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba)

You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But lets talk about it
Oh, wouldn't it be nice

good night baby
sleep tight baby

good night baby
sleep tight baby

good night baby
sleep tight baby

good night baby
sleep tight baby
