Ruth Berkowitz Ueberall Berlin

NEWPORT NEWS - Ruth Berlin passed away Oct. 30, 2011, at the age of 89.

Ruth was born July 1, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Harry Yarm and Kate Berkowitz. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Brooklyn College. Ruth married Harold Ueberall in 1942; he was killed in action at Iwo Jima in 1944, leaving a young widow and daughter, Kathie.

Ruth married Irving Berlin, a physician, in 1947, beginning a marriage that would last 53 years. The family moved to Hampton Roads in 1950, where Ruth lived for the rest of her life. She volunteered for many organizations in her lifetime, including the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, which she served as president and for which she received the Hannah G. Solomon award; Hadassah; the sisterhood of Rodef Sholom Temple; the League of Women Voters; the Thomas Nelson Community College Board; the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra Board; the Family Service Board; the information desk at Hampton General Hospital; the Red Cross; and as a docent at the Hampton History Museum and the Virginia War Museum. She received an award for her many years of volunteer service from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Ruth was preceded in death by her two husbands, Harold Ueberall and Irving Berlin; an infant son, Daniel Berlin; and her sister, Marjorie Collins.

She is survived by her children, Kathie Berlin, Pamela Berlin and Eric Berlin; grandchildren, Kimberly Oser, Molly Carden and Jesse Berlin; and great-grandchildren, Wyatt Oser and Devon Oser.
Services will be held at a later date.

My deepest sympathy to the Berlin family, as we were neighbors on Ivy Home Road, and Eric and my daughter, Carolyn, were in school together. Ruth and I were on various committees together over the years. God's richest blessings to you all. Shalom.

Our deepest sympathy in your loss. Ruth was a wonderful person. We saw her not long ago at the Arbors and chatted. Although not well, she held a cheerful conversation with us.
She was a love.

Kathie, it has been many years since we've seen each other but I was saddened to hear about your mother. She was always so nice to me whenever I was at your home. She was a wonderful lady.

Dear Kathie, Pamela. and Eric and Family,
I send my condolences and blessings to you all. Your Mom shared so much of herself to life on the Virginia Peninsula. We shall all miss her intelligence, her knowledge and love of music, and her commitments to many worthwhile programs and organizations.
I respected her very much.
