Newport News High School Class of @ 1940

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today, as the city of Newport News lost one of its most distinguished citizens.   Bert Nachman, Class of @ 1940, husband of Sonya Rosenfeld Nachman, and brother of Betty Nachman Levin, passed away at his desk in Newport News on Monday, October 24, 2016, at the age of 91.

May his memory be for a blessing always.

                           Bert Alvin Nachman

NEWPORT NEWS - Bert Alvin Nachman, a lifelong resident of Newport News and dedicated attorney, passed away at his law office desk at the age of 91 on October 24, 2016.

Born September 25, 1925 to the late Sadie C. and Harry L. Nachman, Bert graduated from Newport News High School at the age of 15, prior to attending Staunton Military Academy and serving for 30 months in the US Navy Air Corps during World War II. Bert received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia in 1950 and 1952, respectively, where he also served as the sports editor of the Cavalier Daily and President of Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity.

On December 21, following the completion of his studies, he married Sonya Rosenfeld; his wife of 63 years.

Always active in civic affairs, Bert was a member of the Jaycees and the Newport News Elks Lodge, served as a member of the Board of the Salvation Army, and participated organizationally in the Peninsula United Fund and Riverside Hospital campaigns. He participated in the Annual Allied Jewish Appeal campaigns.

He was a member, past Board member and Vice President of Rodef Sholom Temple.

While serving as the Chairman of the Conference of Christians and Jews, an integrated organization, he was compelled to conduct its activities at local military bases in response to the racially segregated environment then extant in the City. Bert's love of the law commenced upon his admission to the bar in 1959 and association as a practicing attorney with his father, City Attorney, Harry L. Nachman.

Admitted to practice in the State of Virginia and various Federal district and appellate courts, Bert served the local bar as a Director and President in 1970. Prior to becoming a sole practitioner, Bert was a partner in the firm of Nachman, Jacobs, Murchison, and Beale. He was also installed and enjoyed his position as a Substitute Judge of Newport News Civil, Traffic, Juvenile and Domestic relations Court for 53 years.

His dedication to the law persisted as he and Sonya moved from their home of many years to Windward Towers, where he served on the condominium's Board of Directors and made frequent "house calls" to requesting residents. Closely following his love of his family and the law was Bert's affinity for tennis; both the challenge of the match and the camaraderie of his fellow players. Affiliated with the Hilton Tennis Club, the Warwick Yacht and Tennis Club, and Centre Court, his favorite partner was his son, Jon, with whom he shared many hours volleying and participating in doubles tournaments.

Culturally, Bert enjoyed reading historical biographies, attending the theater and the Virginia Symphony, as well as traveling.

Bert will always remain an important part in the lives of his wife, Sonya, and his children, Cathy (Larry) Weisman, Jon (Leigh H.) Nachman, Lisa (Jim) Kaufman and Sheri (Jay) Weber, and his sister, Betty Nachman Levin.

His joy was his grandchildren, Brian and Justin Weisman, Basha and Rebekah Nachman, Nathan and Melissa Kaufman, Brooke (Ed) Schrader, and Adam Weber, and his great-grandchildren, Rachel, Anna and Eli Schrader.

He thought of himself as a very lucky man.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 28th at 11am in the Chapel of the Peninsula Funeral Home on Warwick Boulevard, followed by a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to: Dr. Michael E. Williams Research Foundation/ Hematology, Oncology, Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, PO Box 400331, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4331.
