“Bittersweet
October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause - Carol Bishop Hipps |
![]() |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Okay, I'll tell
you the truth. I found the quotation first, and tried to locate a song to
go with it. That's kinda backwards, I know, but in this case, I think it worked.
I was totally unfamiliar with this 1981
U2 song, but I think it's quite lovely
- and unusual, being almost entirely an instrumental number.

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 10/24/09, 10:45 PM - "My Dad":
Carol,
Would you please put my dad, Bill Reece of Newport
News. VA, on your prayer list. I just got a call that he has been taken to the
hospital coughing up blood. He has not been well for a week or so and they are
running tests to see if they can find out the cause. We are all very worried
about him.
Thanks,
Ruthie
YOWZERONI! Thanks for letting us know,
Ruthie! We'll keep him in our prayers!

Tell your readers I'm
working on a story about the place - with

Gathering facts, other illustrations and memories of varying level of detail (and sometimes a bit conflicting).
Please ask if anyone is old enough to have dined or otherwise been inside the place that can provide me interior memories. They can send to me at:

AS PROMISED (with much more still to come):
From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 10/13/09
- "Reunions and '69":
| Webdoll, Not too long ago the Class of '69 held its gala 40-year reunion in September, reported faithfully by my cousin Sherry Hensel Huyck ('69). She sent this note and I'm certain has no qualms about my sharing portions of her commentary. My primary purpose was to offer these two images of the Annual Winter Band Concert Program, Feb. 20, 1969, at which Miz Sherry is listed as head of the Glockenspiel section of the marching band, and first chair Bass Clarinet in the concert band. I need mention, too, that my baby sister Fayetta Covert Stansbury (FHS '72) also played Glockenspiel in the marching band and was percussionist in concert season. Herbert Cox was director. The program appeared amid the debris of my vast basement archive (koff, koff). Herewith, the abridged comments with the urls for pictures provided by classmate John Whitcomb which you may have already included in your usually complete links. What a great time we just had at our 40th HS reunion... The Typhoons are still going strong even though they tried to get rid of us… they never will!!! Did you know that Saunders Stadium was torn down? Bruce Howell, one of our class members (grew up in the 700 block of my street [72nd]) got 60 bricks from there, cleaned them and another classmate who owns an engraving shop made a small plate for them in blue w/NNHS Typhoons on there and they gave them to us Saturday night.... Scrubbing Bulkheads
I was scrubbing the bulkhead on the USS Kitty Hawk one Sunday morning when the
loud-speaker announced:
"Religious services. Maintain silence about the decks. Dis-continue all
unnecessary work."
An hour later, the opinion many of us held regarding our daily routine, was
confirmed with this announcement:
"Resume all unnecessary work."
