10/24/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Sunny

“There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on,
and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October.”

- Nathaniel Hawthorne
(04 July 1804 - 19 May 1864)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This must be another one of those weather-inspired Newsletters.  If there's no sun where you are today, then just shine yourself.

BONUS #1 - - Sunny - Marvin Gaye, 1966

BONUS #2 - - Sunny - Stevie Wonder, 1968

BONUS #3 - - Sunny - Boney M, 2006

"Sunny" is the name of a song written by Bobby Hebb. It is one of the most covered popular songs, with hundreds of versions released. BMI rates "Sunny" number 25 in its "Top 100 songs of the century".

Hebb wrote the song after 22 November 1963, the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Hebb's older brother Harold was killed in a knife fight outside a Nashville nightclub. Hebb was devastated by both events and many critics say that those events inspired the tune. According to Hebb, he wrote the song as an expression of a preference for a "sunny" disposition over a "lousy" disposition.[1] Certainly, events influenced Bobby's songwriting, but his timeless melody, crossing over into R&B (#3 on U.S. R&B chart) Country and Pop (#2 on U.S. Pop chart), together with the optimistic lyrics, came from the artist's desire to express that one should always "look at the bright side" - a direct quote from the author. Hebb has said about "Sunny":

"All my intentions were just to think of happier times – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low tide. After I wrote it, I thought "Sunny" just might be a different approach to what Johnny Bragg was talking about in 'Just Walkin' in the Rain'"...

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important! When I tried to vote for Grace again today, I noticed the site was trying to pull a switcheroo on me. It tried to persuade me to vote for the wrong Grace!  OH, NO!

Grace is #1 in pet of the month:

and #3 in pet of the year:

  WOWZERONI!!! That's fabulous, Norris!
YIKESARONI-RINI!   Grace's ratings have dropped considerably since I've been gone and stopped nagging you!!! Y'all "git back to work!"

6.    From Frank Blechman ('65) of Northern VA - 10/15/10 - Q.: "A Luck Duck?!?"

A.: Yes, a Luck Duck.

Start with an 8-1/2" X 11" sheet of paper.  Fold to form a perfect square, and tear or cut off the surplus, but reserve said surplus for making smaller duckies.  Follow these (or similar) directions to create as many ducks as necessary to bring a sufficient amount of luck to your classmates when placed on their desks prior to important tests or exams.

Do not forget to write "LUCK" on one wing and "DUCK" on the other.  There you have it.

   Thanks, Frank!

From Frances Goodson Wang ('65) of MD - 10/18/10 - "'Sherlock': A Reminder":

This may be of interest to some.  I have the region 2 DVD and am totally besotted with the actors playing Holmes and Watson.
The music is first rate, also.
"Sherlock": A Reminder

Greetings, Tin Boxers and Friends!

In case it has slipped anyone's mind, the new PBS series "Sherlock" will air this Sunday October 24th. Check the listings for program times in your area at

Happy viewing,
   COOL BEANS! Thanks, Frances!

From Frances Goodson Wang ('65) of MD - 10/18/10 - "Reunion":

Dear Carol,

So good to see you at the reunion!  I appreciate the work that went into planning and executing both evenings.   Lynn's (Walker Brothers - '65 - of VA) home is beautiful and the food was delicious. The casual picnic was pitch perfect.  Seeing everyone was heavenly.  I am so glad I finally decided to come.

Carol, I am giving you my new contact information: new phone number and email address so anyone who wished to visit me when in MD can find me by contacting you.   I hope to see familiar faces at least once in awhile rather than only five years from now!!

I enjoyed seeing old friends and knowing we are, despite age and life experiences, much the same, probably better.  It was so comfortable being with everyone.   As I told several, I felt a sense of belonging I do not feel here in Maryland and know for sure that when my son, Devan, finishes at American U. Law, I am going to sell here and come HOME.  I want to live in the Hilton Area so I can walk to the library and to the pier.  Until then, I offer an open invitation to my NNHS Class of 65 family.

I join
George (Fenigsohn - '65 - of VA) in encouraging our classmates to go see Bobby Ruben ('65 - of VA).  I remember him with a full heart and know he would enjoy anyone who visits.

Warmest regards to all,
Frances Goodson

Thanks so much, Frances - I echo all that you said!

From Dimples Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC - 10/19/10 - "Lane splitting, hang on...":

Here, you watch this, I can't take another six and a half minutes of Adrenaline coursing through my body !

Lane splitting, hang on...

She doesn't normally ride her bike like this....just happened to be late for her hair dresser appointment!

How to handle traffic on a bike -

AAIIIEEEEE!!! See, Lady, this is why I don't drive! Thanks, Dimples!

From George Helliesen ('61) of MI - 10/20/10 - "POTATOES":

Please read all the way to the end…it’s worth it…I promise!

A Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other,

And finally they got married, and had a little sweet potato, which they called 'Yam.'
Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they told her about the facts of life.
They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed,
and get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato,' and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots.

Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her!

But on the other hand she wouldn't stay home and become a Couch Potato either.

She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her
Shoestring Cousins.

When she went off to Europe, Mr. And Mrs. Potato told Yam
to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland,
and the greasy guys from France called the French Fries.
And when she went out West, to watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get scalloped..

Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate
with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other
side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all
the trucks that say, 'Frito Lay.'

Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's Potato University) so
that when she graduated she'd really be in the Chips.

But in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home
and announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw.

Tom Brokaw!

Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset.

They told Yam she couldn't possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he's just.......

Are you ready for this?

Are you sure?

Here it is!

Not at all, George - thanks for the giggles!!!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 10/21/10 - "What to wear on Halloween":

What To Wear On Halloween

GIGGLES!!! Norris Sweetie, you baaad! Thanks!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 10/20/10 - "DUCKS IN HEAVEN":

Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven.

When they get there, St. Peter says, 'We only have one rule here in heaven: Don't step on the ducks!'

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one.

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, 'Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly man!'

The next day, the second woman steps accidentally on a duck and along comes St. Peter, who doesn't miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment as for the first woman.

The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps.

She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on.... very tall, long eyelashes, muscular.

St. Peter chains them together without saying a word.

The happy woman says, 'I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?'

The guy says, 'I don't know about you, but I stepped on a duck.'

      Thanks, Shari!

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain.
The dark days are gone, and the bright days are here,
My Sunny one shines so sincere.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet.
Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way.
You gave to me your all and all.
Now I feel ten feet tall.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the truth you let me see.
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to C.
My life was torn like a wind-blown sand,
And the rock was formed when you held my hand.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the smile upon your face.
Sunny, thank you for the gleam that shows its grace.
You're my spark of nature's fire,
You're my sweet complete desire.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain...
