Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   We have yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.       Lanny Midkiff, Classes of 1962 and 1963, husband of   Lynda Burton Midkiff (Hampton HS / NNHS - '64) of VA, passed away unexpectedly in Graftton on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at the age of 68.

   He was the brother of Grace Midkiff Scarpa, Patsy Midkiff Mooney, and   Ned Midkiff ('59) of VA, and brother-in-law of  Betty Burton Gary ('65) of VA, Michael Scarpa,   Jimmy Mooney ('57),   Rocky Gary ('64) of VA, Charles Burton (HHS),  John Burton (HHS - '58) of RI, and     Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI.

Hi Carol,   We have just learned of the passing of     Lanny Midkiff of Grafton, VA. I am sure others that have more details will be in touch soon. Thanks for all you do,   Betty Gary NNHS ‘65    Oh, Betty, I'm so sorry to hear this (I just found your note)!  Thank you so much for letting me know; please pass along to Lynda my deepest condolences.    I'm going out of town this evening and won't be back until Saturday night. Meanwhile, I've added Lanny to the Memoriam Pages for both the Classes of 1962 and 1963, as both seem able to lay claim to him.

                Lanny L. Midkiff, Sr.

				YORKTOWN - Lanny L. Midkiff Sr., 68, of Yorktown, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 18, 2011. Lanny was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Aug. 12, 1943. His father, James Midkiff, and mother, Bessie Midkiff, moved to Newport News in the 1940's. Lanny attended Newport News H.S. and received awards in football. He also attended Old Dominion University and Thomas Nelson Community College. He was an ironworker for many years in commercial construction.

One can't think of the old neighborhood and Newport News football in that era without Lanny coming to mind. Seems he was always there. He was the center on our varsity team, followed by Charles Buffington later, and it seemed wherever there was a football around he was over it. Last time I saw Lanny was the summer of '67. I was just out of the Corps and we met at the White Oak Lodge. He'd had more beers than I that night, so he asked me to drive us in his Mustang to Buckroe, with Waverly Rosser and a couple others, and I immediately backed over the No Parking sign out front, trying to get out of the parking lot. Didn't hurt the car, but bent the sign to the ground. All of which makes me regret that I haven't sought him out over the years.
