Helen Gardner Hunewill Newport News High School Class of 1941 |
![]() |
Dear
Friends and Schoolmates,
We have even more sad news
today. Helen
Gardner Hunewill, Class of 1941, mother of
Gail Watkins
Conway ('64) and Ann Watkins Grant, and sister of Brian Gardner, Don
Gardner, and Cheryl Gardner Pearce, and of the late Sarah Gardner
Davis and Edward Gardner, passed away in Newport News on Monday, October
4,
2010 at the age of 87.
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 10/08/10
- "Mother of
Gail Watkins (Conway), NNHS
1964":
Carol, I am fairly sure that this lady is the mother of my classmate, Gail Watkins Conway, whose husband is named David. Also, the number of Conway grandchildren matches the number of Conway children, which Gail reported for the 2009 Old Rusty Anchor.
I have sent the obit to
Sue Miller Dearnley,
Cookie
Phillips Tyndall,
Jane
Coltrain Leonard, and
Angie Ray
Smith for confirmation. If true, I will notify my class, but we have missed the
services and burial.
Actually, these photos cinch it; I
can see Gail in several.

Thank you, David. I had
neglected to mention Gail and her sister Ann in my original announcement.

Lead Me Gently Home
Words and Music
by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(7 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.
* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
