The Sweetest Sounds

“Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.

-  Percy Bysshe Shelley
(04 Aug 1792 - 08 July 1822)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme is a sentimental favorite of mine - and it's all about me, right?

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sweetest_Sounds_(song)

"The Sweetest Sounds" is a popular song, with words and music written by Richard Rodgers for the 1962 musical No Strings. The song opens and closes the show for characters Barbara Woodruff and David Jordan, performed by Diahann Carroll and Richard Kiley in the original Broadway theatre production and subsequent cast recording.

The song is featured in the 1997 adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, performed as a duet by Brandy and Paolo Montalbán. Barbra Streisand featured the song in the 1973 broadcast Barbra Streisand...And Other Musical Instruments...

The melodic theme appears to have been inspired by an orchestral figure in the final movement of Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 (Brahms) (measures 64-80).

I finished this small purse of my own design shortly before Hurricane Matthew hit. It's made in single crochet using Red Heart Paddy Green and Hunter Green yarns held together, and edged with metallic gold crochet thread. A vintage gold brooch insures that the flap stays shut!

So as you can imagine, I have baby things on the brain again. The set that were just born are a boy and a girl, so I wanted to make them a pair of blankets that were soft, cozy, and coordinate well together without being exactly the same. The result was the Sweetest Baby Blanket!"

The Sweetest Sounds

Words and music by Richard Rodgers (28 June 1902 – 31 Dec 1979)

for "
No Strings", 1962

What do I really hear?
What is in the ear of my mind?
Which sounds are true and clear?
And which will never be defined?

The sweetest sounds I'll ever hear
Are still inside my head
The kindest words I'll ever know
Are waiting to be said
The most and entrancing side of all [should be sight, not side]
Is yet for me to see
And the dearest love in all the world
Is waiting somewhere for me
Is waiting somewhere, somewhere for me
