Cole
Porter, press interview, Feb. 8, 1955 |
![]() |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's Newsletter, repeated from exactly three years ago today, honors one of my favorite composers, Cole Porter, who died 44 years ago today. He was an amazingly prolific composer, but I do believe of all those songs, this is my very favorite.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA -
10/14/08 - "The Fido
Puzzle":
Now ... the REALLY interesting question is this:
This phenomenon involving the number "9" works in our number system, which uses
the base 10, i.e. the numerals 0 through 9.
Does there exist an analogous phenomenon for numbers in other base systems, e.g.
the base 8, using numerals 0 through 7?
How about binary, which is base 2, using only the numeral 0 and 1?
Hmmmm ....
Ahhh, the mind
boggles!!! Thank you, Captain!
It does give one pause ....

10/14/08 - "NNHS CLASS OF 1964, 45TH REUNION":
MY, HOW TIME FLIES!!
It sure doesn't seem like five years
have passed since we first gathered the Reunion Committee in November 2003 to
begin planning the 40th Reunion, but the calendar does not lie.
And, so, we find that the 45th Reunion is upon us, and it is time to start
thinking about when, where, and what.
The Kick-Off meeting of the NNHS Class of 1964 45-Year Reunion Committee is
scheduled for 6:00 PM, Thursday, October 16th, in the lobby of the OMNI Newport
News Hotel.
Oh, WOW! It
IS that time again, isn't it?!?
Okay, David, here ya go:

From www.LifeScript.com - 10/14/08 - "Color Clues to Your Personality":
Color Your Personality - What Does Your Favorite Hue Say About You?
By Bonnie Siegler, Special to LifeScript

Your favorite: Yellow
Your least favorite: Blue
What this says about you: Your ability to see the big picture lets you pinpoint
what’s missing, helping you transform failure into success. But forgetting
details is your biggest roadblock.
Your favorite: Blue
Your least favorite: Yellow
What this says about you: You’re a great strategist who can plan imaginatively.
The problem? What you think you need often differs from what you really need.
The key to your success is being more practical in the planning phase
Your favorite: Blue
Your least favorite: Red
What this says about you: You have a rare ability to see the possibilities of
your goals, as well as the limitations. But difficulty expressing yourself may
keep you from garnering the support you need to achieve your dreams.

From My Friend, Judy, of IL - 10/09/08 - "Dear Mom and Dad":
How funny! Freak out parents time!!!
Dear
Mom and Dad,
Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV
and are worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and two sleeping bags got
washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the
mountain looking for Adam when it happened.
Oh yes, please call Adam's mother and tell her he is okay. He can't write
because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was
neat. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn't been for the
lightning.
Scoutmaster Keith got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling
anyone. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably
didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will blow
up?
The wet wood didn't burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes.
Jimmie is going to look weird until his hair grows back.
We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Keith gets the bus fixed. It wasn't
his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster
Keith said that with a bus that old you have to expect something to break down;
that's probably why he can't get insurance.
We think it's a neat bus. He doesn't care if we get it dirty and if it's hot,
sometimes he lets us ride on the fenders. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a
bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway
patrol man stopped and talked to us.
Scoutmaster Keith is a neat guy. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he
is teaching Jessie how to drive on the mountain roads where there isn't any
cops. All we ever see up there are logging trucks.
This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to the
rapids. Scoutmaster Keith wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Adam was
afraid he would sink because of his cast, it's concrete because we didn't have
any plaster, so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You can still see
some of the trees under the water from the flood.
Scoutmaster Keith isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad
about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we
are trying not to cause him any trouble.
Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived
into the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works.
Steven and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Keith said it probably was just food
poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with food
they ate in prison. I'm so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said
he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time.
By the way, what is a pedal-file?
I have to go now. We are going to town to mail our letters and buy
some more beer and ammo. Don't worry about anything.
Love, Matthew
YIKESARONI!!!
Thanks,
Judy!

- Music and
Lyrics by
Cole Porter for
"Kiss Me Kate",
1948
Strange dear, but true dear,
When I'm close to you, dear,
The stars fill the sky,
So in love with you am I.
Even without you,
My arms fold about you,
You know, darling why,
So in love with you am I.
In love with the night mysterious,
The night when you first were there.
In love with my joy delirious,
When I knew that you could care OR
The thought that you might care.
So taunt me, and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I'm yours till I die,
So in love, so in love,
So in love with you, my love, am I.
