10/13/12 - NNHS Newsletter - 237th Birthday of the United States Navy

A powerful Navy we have always regarded as our proper and natural
means of defense; and it has always been of defense that we have
thought, never of aggression or of conquest. But who shall tell us now
what sort of Navy to build? We shall take leave to be strong upon the seas,
in the future as in the past; and there will be no thought of offense
or provocation in that. Our ships are our natural bulwarks.”

- President Woodrow Wilson, 08 Dec 1914, An Annual Message to Congress
(28 Dec 1856 - 03 Feb 1924)

10 Dec 1996 - Northern Puerto Rican Operations Area: USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) 27 Aug 2004 - Naval Station, Norfolk, VA: A UH-3H Sea King helicopter flies over USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), USS George Washington (CVN 73), and USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We try to celebrate this day together every year.  Sometimes we do, and sometimes we don't.

Hug a sailor today.  Or salute one.  Well, okay, just thank one for their services rendered.  I still would personally prefer the hugging option.

REPEATED - WITH STRONGER EMPHASIS:

From John ('59) and     Aretie Gallins ('59) Patterson of TN - 10/04/12, 7:25 PM - "RE:   Richard Oliver":

Carol,

We were hoping to find Richard and communicate with him before going to Costa Rica in hopes of getting the real skinny on the places where and where not to go down there.....

Good to hear from you - - say "Hi" to everybody for us - - and let us know if you find Richard's e-mail address.

Best Regards,

John

   Hi again, John and Aretie!

I personally have no experience in locating people abroad, but we do have some experts in that field among us. And surely someone has remained in touch with Richard all these years. Perhaps one of y'all has experience in traveling to Costa Rica.

So now there are three ways to help - and this is important!

   "Anyone? Anyone?"

From Jimmy Walker ('62) of VA - 10/11/12, 2:36 PM - "RE: 50-Year Reunion for the Class of 1962":

This came from   Larry Williams...I thought he was great, how about you guys?

"THANKS FOR HAVING ME AT THIS GREAT EVENT, Larry"

Jimmy Walker

BTW: I thought Larry & Tina's dancing was over the top!!!...a thing of beauty.

From Bobby Hilling ('62) of VA - 10/11/12, 4:07 PM - "RE: reunion":

Larry was outstanding and the music was right on.. Thank you, Walker, for bringing Larry onboard.....

I did dance the last dance of the night which was my goal...American Bandstand, here I come....

Luv to all of you.. you made it extra extra special..

From Tina Burroughs Farmer ('62) of VA - 10/12/12, 5:51 PM - "RE: reunion":

Yes, I thought Larry did a great job. I think a few more beach music songs could have been played, but that's just me. I, of course, loved dancing w/Larry but I liked dancing with all of those who asked me (or I asked)... Even liked dancing by myself ... I have no shame!

I think this reunion rivaled the 35th. I also think Bobby did a great job as MC. The food (especially on Saturday) was outstanding. Loved the hospitality suite - really filled in the gaps and gave people a good socializing outlet. All in all, it was a huge success.

Tina

A big DITTO to all of the above!  Thank you again so much for inviting         Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC and me as your guests; we had a fabulous time!

The guy said, "Officer, I have contacts."

The cop said, "Look, buddy, I don't care who you know, ... I'm giving you a ticket."

Anchors Aweigh

Words (Verses One and Two) by Midshipman First Class Alfred Hart Miles, USNA - '07, 1906 ;
Music by Lieut. Charles A. Zimmermann, USN, 1906
Words (Verse Three) by Midshipman Royal Lovell, USNA - '26.

Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky.
We'll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh.
Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

Get underway, Navy, Decks cleared for the fray,
We'll hoist true Navy Blue So Army down your Grey-y-y-y.
Full speed ahead, Navy; Army heave to,
Furl Black and Grey and Gold and hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue

Blue of the Seven Seas; Gold of God's great sun
Let these our colors be Till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true With honor over, honor over all.
