From the Daily Press - 10/06/18:

                       Marion Astor Althaus

NEWPORT NEWS - Marian Astor Althaus died peacefully at her home on Thursday, October 4, 2018. She was 92 years old.

A native of Newport News, she was a graduate of Newport News High School and attended classes at Christopher Newport College.

She worked as a secretary at NASA Langley in the late-1950s, before joining her husband Sam at Althaus Delicatessen and Caterers, from which she retired when the business closed in 1997.

A lover of art and design, Marian was a founding contributor to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. and a longtime supporter of fine and performing arts on the Peninsula.

A lifelong member of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue, Marian was known for her gourmet cooking and her passion for interior and clothing design. She was an avid reader and investor, and enjoyed her beloved Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald recordings, along with TV crime dramas, who-done-its, TCM, and QVC.

Marian was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Samuel Althaus, and her sister, Lorraine Astor Farber.

Survivors include a loving family: her daughters and son-in-law, Carole and Martin Tanenhaus of Baltimore, MD, and Sheryl Luebke of Virginia Beach, VA; her son, Harry Althaus, of Brooklyn, NY; sister Joanne Neilson of Tustin, CA; grandchildren Debbie Schwartz and Michael Tanenhaus; and six great-grandchildren.

The family expresses very special thanks to Marian's caregivers--Lisa Scott, Amy Deans, and the wonderful staff of Home Instead Senior Care.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 7, at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, 1817 Kecoughtan Road in Hampton. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Althaus Family Endowed Merit Leadership Scholarship at Christopher Newport University, or to the National Museum of Women in the Arts. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks
