10/01/16 - NNHS Newsletter - Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo

And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field,
how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:”

- Matthew 6: 28

“Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not;
and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

- Luke 12: 27

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   I first heard this song in 1952 when I was five years old. I remember being quite enchanted by the loveliness of it all, but totally puzzled. Wasn't love supposed to be a happy thing? How could it possibly ever be sad? Ah, childhood!

NEWS UPDATE:

  From Me ('65) of NC - 10/01/16 - "Massive Thunderstorm and Flooding in Fayetteville plus Home Damages":

    Here are some of the images of the damages we sustained in Wednesday's storm. As you can see, the ceiling is about to fall. We had initially held out hope that our king-sized mattress had not been ruined, but in that we did err.

   My Glade Plus-Ins not withstanding, the house is beginning to reek, whether from the carpet, the ceiling or the mattress, we shall see...

   As it turns out, our children of other parents,   Joe Mansfield (Stanton College Prep School, FL - '02) AND   Megan Fulmer Mansfield (John Marshall HS, TX - '02) of TX, are also our landlords, and their homeowner's insurance will cover the cost of household repairs. That unfortunately does not extend to our mattress, so it seems as though we'll be sleeping in the living room indefinitely.

Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo

Music by Bronisław Kaper
(05 Feb 1902 – 26 Apr 1983)

Words by Helen Deutsch
(21 Mar 1906 - 15 Mar 1992), 1952

On every tree there sits a bird,
Singing a song of love.
On every tree there sits a bird,
And everyone I've ever heard
Breaks my heart with all the words,
Singing a song of love.

A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.

A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili----Hi-Lili----Hi-Lo.
