Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
I first heard
this song in 1952 when I was five years old. I remember being quite
enchanted by the loveliness of it all, but totally puzzled. Wasn't love
supposed to be a happy thing? How could it possibly ever be sad?
Ah, childhood!

On every tree there sits a bird,
Singing a song of love.
On every tree there sits a bird,
And everyone I've ever heard
Breaks my heart with all the words,
Singing a song of love.
A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili----Hi-Lili----Hi-Lo.
