09/21/09 - NNHS Newsletter - Come Monday

“On Monday, when the sun is hot,
I wonder to myself a lot:
`Now is it true, or is it not,
That what is which and which is what?'

- A. A. Hodge
(18 July 1823 - 12 Nov 1886)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme would seem to be a couple of weeks late, but, ah, well, ah, you know.....!

HEALTH UPDATE:

From My Friend, Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 09/21/09, 8:22 AM - "me":

Hi All

I saw the eye doctor Friday and my eyes are holding steady. No Braille yet! Goody Goody.

My wrist and hand are doing much better; in fact, I'm ahead of what the therapist thinks I should be. I told her I'm a bit of an overachiever when it comes to putting my body back together. :-) In fact, she is calling Dr. Payne to see if we can start strength training this week. That's at least 3 weeks early. Again, Goody Goody. I still can't drive till I see him again in OCT! Darn. I hate having to ask every one for rides!

Hope all of you are doing well.

All my love

Judy

SUPER-DE-DUPER! Thanks, Judy - hang in there!

40 YEARS AGO TODAY:

Sunday, September 21, 1969 - On this, the last day of the momentous summer of 1969, nothing particularly noteworthy happened - EXCEPT  that in an American Football League game between the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos, punter Steve O'Neal (b. 04 Feb 1946) of the Jets kicked a 98 yard punt that is still the professional football record.  (Thanks, Sydney!)

So ends this seasonal feature of our Newsletter - "Not with a bang, but a whimper."  ( - TS Eliot, The Hollow Men, 1925)

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 09/19/09 - "Daniel School Class Picture":

Webdoll,

We keep saying goodbye to friends and classmates like     Harriet Nachman Storm (’60), with whom I also worked at the Daily Press. I am indebted that as Society Page editor, she ensured my fiancé/bride Loretta M. Lynn Covert (’68, Ludwigsburg, Germany, American High School) was announced properly in the Sunday edition in April 1969. May she rest in peace.

Thank you, Norm! I added this to Harriet's Memorial Newsletter:

With that remembrance, I offer you the final installment of Our Gang as pre-teens from both sides of the tracks -- Orrsville, downtown and North End.

Here is     Miss Ellena Armistead’s seventh grade class at John W. Daniel School, spring 1956, taken on stage, third floor. Again, apologies for the brain glitch that prevents further identification of kids that I really know – believe me.

Front Row:  Robert (Buddy) Helterbran, William Mingee, James Sawyer (?), Norman Covert, _?_, Larry Zimmerman.

2nd Row:  __?_, Diane Hunt, Shirley McMahone, Kathy Solomon, Mamie Stanfield, _?_, David Woodard.

3rd Row:  Betty Marshall, Linda Ramsey, Patricia Gabriel, _?_, _?_, Shirley ,  _?_, Miss Armistead.

4th Row __?__, __?__, James Lovedahl, James Roland, Richard Lovelace, _?_, _?_.

Continued thanks and appreciation for all you do to keep us forever young.

Norm Covert (’61) MD

AWWW! Thanks again, Normie! Some of these faces were immediately recognizable -   Buddy Helterbran,   Bill Mingee, Kathy Solomon, Jimmy Lovedahl, and you yourself; others I could see after you told me who they were.

   Any help from the class???

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 09/20/09 - "WHS class of 1959 Reunion":

We met each other and had a great time.  There were 390 in the class.  40 have passed away. 100 were not located or did not want any connection with these events.  About 146 attended the Sat nite dinner dance and good times were had by all.  Another reunion is planned in the future for any existing survivors.

Thanks so much for your report, Norris - we were thinking of you!

From Me ('65) of IL - 09/21/09 - "Blue Star Diner":

While creating the Memorial Newsletter for  Fannie Blentson this morning, I took the opportunity to update the page for the Blue Star Diner which she owned:

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 09/20/09 - "Enjoy the Ride":

Even if you have seen it before, it will make you feel good to watch and listen.....then think about it.

God Bless!
Judy

Every new day is a gift-- all you have to do is untie the ribbon  ;-)

I got goose bumps when I watched this - maybe it is the music?

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 09/20/09:

Paying Bills

My wife and I, both graduate students, recently celebrated the arrival of our first child. At my wife's insistence, we had paid our entire medical bill and were now worried about meeting other payments.

We were discussing our sad financial situation one evening when our son demanded a diaper change.

As my wife leaned over the baby's crib, I heard her mutter, "The only thing in the house that's paid for, and it leaks."

Come Monday

Written and Recorded by Jimmy Buffett, 1973/1974
(b. 25 Dec 1946)

Headin' up to San Francisco
For the Labor Day week-end show
I've got my hush-puppies on
I guess I never was meant for glitter rock and roll
And honey I didn't know
That I'd be missin' you so

Chorus:

Come Monday, it'll be all right
Come Monday, I'll be holdin' you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L. A. haze
And I just want you back by my side

Yes, it's been quite a summer
Rent-a-cars and west-bound trains
And now you're off on vacation
Somethin' you tried to explain
And darlin', since I love you so
That's the reason I just let you go

Chorus:

Come Monday, it'll be all right
Come Monday, I'll be holdin' you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L. A. haze
And I just want you back by my side

I can't help it honey
You're that much a part of me now
Remember that night in Montana
When we said there'd be no room for doubt

I hope you're enjoyin' the scen'ry
I know that it's pretty up there
We can go hikin' on tuesday
With you I'd walk anywhere
California has worn me quite thin
I just can't wait to see you again

Chorus:
Come Monday, it'll be all right
Come Monday, I'll be holdin' you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L. A. haze
And I just want you back by my side
