Suzanne Rene Collier McCown
(16 Feb 1952 - 17 Sept 2012)

Newport News High School / Bethel High School Class of 1970

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
  I am extremely distressed to relate more sad news today.
     Susie Collier McKown, Bethel High School Class of 1970, sister of   Carol Collier Sparrow ('63) of VA   Jeannie Collier Fitzgerald ('65) of VA, Sharon Collier Murphy of VA, and Rick Collier, passed away in Hampton on Monday, September 17, 2012 at the age of 60.

    From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of VA - 09/21/12, 11:53 AM - "     Susie Collier McKown":

Carol,

I thought I'd send this link to you in case you didn't know about this.  The obituary is for Suzie Collier, Jeannie and Carol's younger sister.  I'd heard she'd been sick with cancer for a while.  Since she graduated from Bethel High and the article doesn't mention NNHS or her siblings last names, you probably didn't realize the who it was...

Love,
Sandi

   Thank you so much, Sandi.   I had read this in the middle of the night, but focused on the Bethel High School, and did not read it carefully enough to comprehend what I saw - probably because it seems so inconceivable to me.  I remember Susie so clearly as an adorable little toddler back in Stuart Gardens.

From the Daily Press - 09/20/12:

                   Suzanne Collier McKown

HAMPTON - Suzanne Rene Collier McKown, born Feb. 16, 1952, beloved wife of David, sister of Carol, Jeannie, Sharon and Rick, aunt of many nieces and nephews and cherished friend of so many wonderful and loving friends passed from this life on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012.

She was born in Hampton and was a 1970 graduate of Bethel High School. She was proud to be a member of the concert and marching band and was a multiple music talent. She and Dave loved their camping trips twice a year with all their Cumberland camping buddies and always had great stories to tell us of their adventures.

She was employed for 25 years by the State of Virginia, many of those working for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and took great pleasure setting up their displays at the State Fair of Virginia.

Susie never lost her child-like love of life and was happy with the simplest things in life.

There will be a celebration of life for Susie on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 3 p.m. in Dave and Susie's beloved garden at 17 Holly St., Hampton. Please come and bring a dish to share in honor and memory of Susie's life.  View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Words by Henry van Dyke (10 Nov 1852 - 10 Apr 1933), 1907

Music: Ode to Joy, from the Symphony No. 9 of Ludwig van Beethoven (17 Dec 1720 - 26 Mar1897)

Adapted by Edward Hodges (20 July 1796 - 01 Sept 1867), 1824

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.
