Cold, Cold Heart

“The proud, the cold untroubled heart of stone,
that never mused on sorrow but its own.

- Thomas Campbell

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

You're probably thinking to yourself that I'm rerunning this Newsletter from exactly four years ago today because I'm such a slacker, but..... well, okay, yes, that's true, but I really do rather like this song!

40 YEARS AGO TODAY:

Saturday, September 20, 1969 - The very last Warner Bros. cartoon of the original theatrical Looney Tunes series is released: Injun Trouble.

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 09/19/09 - "nudist church":

A hoax? Not necessarily. We have a nudist Christian church here in NH, which meets, logically enough, in the chapel at the nudist colony about 45 minutes drive from where I live. They've been there for the last 25 or 30 years, at least.

I tend to side with Lady Ardane, Past President of the Salem Council of Witches, a crisply New England Daughters of the American Revolution member.  Asked once by a reporter if her coven worshipped skyclad (nude), she said, "I'm a firm believer in keeping America beautiful. Keep your clothes on!"

Domi O'Brien, NNHS '64

WILD GIGGLES!!! Ja, the more I thought about it, the more I tended to feel it was absolutely a true report. Thanks, Domi!

  From Frances Heath Scott ('62) of VA - 09/19/09 - "  Tommy (Scott - '61)":

Dear Carol,

Thanks for such a speedy response and validating that sometimes I can "get it right" when it comes to the 'puter....which is DEFINITELY NOT my favorite form of communication!!!!  I was never able to fit typing, keyboarding, or whatever term is currently being used, into my schedule at NNHS.  As a result, I use the religious method when facing the computer.......seek and ye shall find!  However, I shall confess that the computer does come in handy, at times....such as now.

GIGGLES! I myself am a two-finger typist, Fran!

Thanks a million (for posting Tommy's upcoming 67th birthday)! As I said, he was so thrilled, and yes, he did cry. (What's so ironic is that he has reverted back to the same haircut he has in the picture. Obviously, he doesn't have to do anything to maintain it, except for having it cut.)

However, I was incorrect re: the weather....looks yucky, but feels good. Supposedly, we are to get sunshine later.

Hope you have had a great nap. I'm jealous!

Fran

Thanks, Fran! I'm so glad Tommy enjoyed the first of his week-long Birthday Greetings!

    But, ANYWAY.....

From Me ('65) of IL - 09/19/09 - "Typhoon Baseball":

Because Tommy was a baseball manager, I was checking the Baseball pages yesterday.  I was aghast to see  that in three-and-a-half years, it had not progressed past a basic skeletal form.  Overcome with the guilt of my slackerdom, I decided to repent and begin scanning those 14 Anchors at long last, starting in the middle (of course).  Unfortunately, I was doing such a poor job of scanning the images, I thought it best to postpone it a few more days when perhaps my skills might improve.....

    From Bunny Booker ('65) of MI - 09/19/09 - "e-mail address":

Carol.......Hope all is well with you and your family. I was was wondering if you could change my e-mail address to ernestbooker@lmicorporation.com. I no longer use the cinabun one since my wife (  Cindy Kellar Booker - Durand Area HS - '67) passed.

Thank you very much,
Bunny

Thanks, Bunny, we're all well here! I'm so sorry! as I often do, I changed your email addy in my own files, and neglected to change it where it's posted onsite!  I've taken care of that now:

From Chuck Jones ('65) of Northern VA - 09/19/09 - "Typhoon Tailgate Party":

Hey Guys,

An ad hoc tailgate party for Typhoons will be held at the Christopher Newport University (CNU) football game on Saturday, October 3rd.  Actually going to the game is optional.  Tailgating begins at 10AM.  Game starts at 1PM. The following information was obtained from the CNU web site.

A new season of Captains Football is almost here!  This year, join CNU Alumni, family and friends in “Alumni Alley” for tailgating prior to each and every Captains home game.  There is no better way to kickoff game day than on the beautiful CNU campus, enjoying great food and meeting new friends.  So wear your Captains gear, break out your grills and prepare your favorite pre-game menu as we get ready to cheer on the Captains.

All CNU fans are welcome at “Alumni Alley” – sponsored by the CNU Alumni Society.  Alumni Alley is conveniently located in Parking Lot N – accessible on game days from Moores Lane and just steps away from the POMOCO stadium entrance gate.  Simply follow the signs on game day from the traffic circle at the entrance to CNU.  Expect great food, special surprises and an outstanding pre-game experience this fall at “Alumni Alley”.

Your main contact in Newport News is Aderon Gibbs ('66).  He can be reached at (telephone number available upon request).  Bring food and drink.  A grill will be provided.  Hope to see you there.

Chuck Jones
NNHS '66

[Okay, that does it. I really am mostly blind.  I looked at that next-to-last sentence, and what I "saw" was, "A girl will be provided."  ARRRGHH!  In the immortal words of Lina Lamont, a.k.a. Jean Hagen, "I cayyyyn't stand it!"]

Thanks, Chuck - sounds like great fun! Somehow, I rather doubt I'll be able to make it myself.....

From My Friend,  Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 09/19/09 - "Bogus E-Mail Alert--Beware!!!!":

If you receive an email from the Department of Health telling you not to eat canned pork because of swine flu...

Ignore it.

It's just Spam.

      MORE GIGGLES! Thanks, Jude!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 09/19/09 - "DO YOU WRITE CHECKS? -- Watch this video to help prevent check fraud!"

Hmmm...interesting! I didn't know this, which of course isn't news, what I don't know could fill a library!!

But, this is worthy of a look. I mean, it could also serve as a teaching tool in how to "wash a check" <better living through chemistry> not to mention it is a sales pitch for that "un-washable" pen. But, if it works ...

DON'T MISS SEEING THIS DEMO.

IT COULD VERY WELL SAVE YOU SOME $$$$$$ IN THE FUTURE - ESPECIALLY IF YOU WRITE CHECKS.

It's beyond amazing what people will do these days, this is a very interesting video,
Always better safe than sorry in this day and age!

If you pay your bills by check, then you need to watch this film.

This is VERY interesting and you need to go get a Uniball 207 pen!!!!  Wal-Mart and Office Depot have them.

They are marked "Helps Prevent Check Fraud" on the packaging.

   WOWZERS! Thanks, Wayne Honey!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 09/19/09 - "Wow, this is something":

This is interesting and so very SWEET-----Sorry if I already sent it to you.

   AWWW! Thank you, Dearest Judy!

From My Friend,  Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 09/12/09 - "Worth Sharing... These will make you smile (and I did, they are cute) - (#7 in a Series of 9)":

  Thanks, Judy!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 09/19/09:

The Talkative Parrot

Rhonda's dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check. Oh, by the way don't worry about my bulldog. He won't bother you.

But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!" "I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!" To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

Cold, Cold Heart

- Hank Williams, 1951
(17 Sept 1923 – 01 Jan 1953)

I tried so hard my dear to show that you’re my every dream,
Yet you’re afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme.
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart.
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue,
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn’t do.
In anger, unkind words are said that make the teardrops start.
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

You’ll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry.
You know you need and want my love, yet you’re afraid to try.
Why do you run and hide from lies?  To try it just ain’t smart.
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me,
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory.
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart.

Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart?
