One After 909

“I knew I was going to take the wrong train, so I left early.”

- Yogi Berra
(b. 12 May 1925)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's delightfully inspired theme was suggested for us months ago by our Wizard of Wonderment,        Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 05/26/09 - "Newsletter for 10 September 2009":

Don’t know if you plan so far ahead, but I have a MIDI for the newsletter for 10 Sep:

The Beatles … One After 909.  Get it?  One after 9/09.

I’m thinking that we need something frivolous and light hearted on the day before 9-11.

ABSOLUTELY! Thank you, David! I just found this video while I was testing the page.  I love Beatles videos.  Were we ever all that young?!?

EXTRA BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59ANY-baJ7Y&NR=1 - 1964 Version

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_After_909:

"... a song by The Beatles, written primarily by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and originally released in 1970 on the album Let It Be. The album version is the live performance from the rooftop concert which took place on 30 January 1969. This performance is also included in the Let It Be film. The song was written as early as 1957, and is one of the first Lennon-McCartney compositions.[1]

Origin of title

"In a 1980 interview, Lennon explained, 'That was something I wrote when I was about seventeen. I lived at 9 Newcastle Road. I was born on the ninth of October-- the ninth month. It's just a number that follows me around, but numerologically, apparently I'm a number six or a three or something, but it's all part of nine.' [2]

"The Beatles recorded a version of the song on 5 March 1963 during the same session that produced their third single, 'From Me to You,' and its B-side 'Thank You Girl.' They were unhappy with the result and that version was not released at the time.[3"

Hi Carol,

I hope you are better. I hate it when you are sick. You mean the world to me.....

Lots of love, Carol,

Linda May ' 66

Thank you so much, Linda May! I think I'm over the worst of it now.  I awoke with it last Tuesday morning, so it's been nine days now.  It must have been the 72-hour flu; I always was a little slow.....

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 09/03/09 - MISPLACED BY DITSY WEBMISTRESS      ('65) of IL until     Joe Madagan ('57) of FL asked me about it on 09/09/09 - "Fourth Grade at Walter Reed":

Hi, Carol:

Maybe my computer skills are failing, but I could not find the photograph of the NNHS Class of 1961 taken of some of the students in the class while attending Walter Reed School in the contribution submitted by Norm Covert ('61) of MD or maybe I was staring at it and did not recognize my younger sister Nancy Madagan Van Orden ('61) of FL who was mentioned by Norm. I wanted to forward it to her daughter, Dr. Kimberly Van Orden and give here a big surprise.

Today I checked the Website to see if the photo was posted under Walter Reed School but did not find the submission photo posted.

Do I need to be recycled through computer classes or just have my eyes checked?

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Neither one! I am so sorry, Gentlemen!

Norm's wonderful treasures arrived on the day when I was probably the sickest - and I've been totally trashed all week.  I remember looking at both images, snuffling through many OOOHS and AHHHS, processing the first picture, falling into my beddie-bye, and waking up wondering if perhaps I may have forgotten something.....

Webdoll,

As in my previous photo submission, apologies for the incomplete listings and hope someone else (who can actually open up your wonderful site) may be able to complete the listing. A couple names came to me as I typed this and I hope my stab at the name is correct.

I equated my image as that of Beaver Cleaver in a previous note, but this photo has me more like Alfred E. Neuman (“What, me worry?”) of MAD magazine infamy.

All of the guys prove that no one manufactured pants to fit boys until some years later. We also may have been wearing our brothers hand-me-downs. No question the girls certainly make up for the boys' lack of sartorial splendor.

Without further comment, here are the lucky students in Mrs. Burton’s Fourth Grade Class, Walter Reed Elementary School, fall 1952:

WOWZERS is right!  Thanks, June, for that picture.  I recognized Mrs. Blake, not sure about Miss Naff, and my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Hubbard, must have come later.  This is the push I needed to unpack those boxes in my garage to find my Memory books!

From June Veneris Collie (Hampton HS - '62) of VA to       Gloria Woolard Price (Hampton HS - '65) of FL- 09/09/09 - "RE: Armstrong Elementary School - WOW!":

Gloria,

It is fun looking at all the pictures of our classmates when they were much younger.  I remember most how my friends looked in high school - and when I see so many in the elementary books it sure makes me smile!

Thank you Carol for helping us reminisce!

My pleasure! Thanks, June - and Gloria!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK5MZBEl1nY

Dave,

You are so kind to make such a suggestion BUT ...

1.  I would have to have at least five drinks and everyone who knows me knows that I'm a one drink girl (maybe two).  AND . . . .

2.  I don't own a dress that would hold that much stuff!!  AND . . .

3.  I don't even do Karaoke.  I'm not sure I can even spell it.

Feel free to suggest someone else.  Oh - and payback is What?

Jeanette

   Thanks, Jeanette!

One After 909

Written by John Lennon, possibly as early as 1957

Recorded by The Beatles, 1970

My baby says she's trav'ling on the One after
Nine-O-Nine.
I said move over honey I'm traveling on that line.
I said move over once, move over twice,
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.
I said I'm trav'ling on the One after Nine-O-Nine.
I begged her not to go and I begged her on my bended knees,
You're only fooling around, you're fooling around with me.
I said move over once, move over twice,
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.
I said I'm trav'ling on the One after Nine-O-Nine.
I've got my bag,
Run to the station.
Railman says you've got the wrong location.
I've got my bag.
Run right home.
Then I find I've got the number wrong,
Well I said I'm trav'ling on the One after
Nine-O-Nine.
I said move over honey I'm traveling on that line.
I said move over once, move over twice,
Come on baby don't be cold as ice.
I said we're trav'ling on the One after
Nine-O,
I said we're trav'ling on the One after
Nine-O,
I said we're trav'ling on the One after
Nine-O-Nine.
