Take These Chains from My Heart

“You mean the world to me,
And I can't get you out of my mind

- Jeffrey Campbell

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Ray Charles woke me up in the middle of the night singing this song.  I don't know how these people keep parading through my room; I happen to know the locks are quite secure.  And how Ray got that piano up to the second floor, I've just no idea.

BONUS #1 - - Take These Chains from My Heart - Hank Williams

BONUS #2 - - Take These Chains from My Heart - Ray Charles, about 1981

"Take These Chains from My Heart" is a 1953 single by Hank Williams with His Drifting Cowboys, written by Fred Rose and Hy Heath. The song was the last of Hank Williams' country number-one hits. The song reached Number One on the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart.[1]

Cover versions of "Take These Chains from My Heart" were recorded by numerous artists. Most notably:

From Me ('65) of IL - 09/09/10 - "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly":

The Good:
For some time now,
my sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59) of NC and        my cousin, Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64) of VA have been operating under the strange delusion that I would be coming out to North Carolina and Virginia this fall, and that we could all have our crazy good times laughing and frequenting "junque stores" - and attend my reunion as well.  So rather than tamper further with their mental health, I decided to set things in motion.  I'll be getting a round-trip ticket from Wednesday, October 6 to Monday, October 18. Thanks, Ladies!   WHOO-HOO!!! Who knew?!?

The Bad:
 Last night
my husband, Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) spoke to his brother Jack (Harty - Bardolph HS - '66 - of IL).  It seems that Jack's remission has come to an end, and he now has third stage melanoma - or third stage myeloma - or something equally undesirable.  We'll be going up to see him on Saturday.  Your mighty prayers on his behalf would be most appreciated.  Thanks!

The Ugly:
Last night there was the unmistakable "sweet essence of skunk" outside.  Right outside.  Right outside our bedroom window.  We do not live out in the boondocks.  I am not making this up.  We were not amused.  YUCKY-PEE-HEEW!!!

From Dustin Baker (Norview HS - '65) of MA - 09/08/10 - "Rosh Hashana and the other Jewish New Years":

Hi Carol,

I wonder how many people realize that the Jewish new year falls on the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar and not the first? Not only that, we actually have three other New Years in Judaism. (Rosh Hashana just happens to be the one used for counting years)

1- The first of Nisan, for marking the reign of the kings
2- The first of Elul, for special taxes on various animals
3- The first of Tishrei, for counting years
4- The 15th of Shevat, for determining the age of trees for tax purposes and fruit picking

Well, Dusty, as often as I have tried to educate myself on the subject, I either missed that altogether, never thought of it in just those terms, or it just swooshed itself from my mind as such much information seems to do to me lately!  Thank you so much for telling us (especially me) - and enjoy your holidays!

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 09/08/10 - "More about Judene Branch Hartless":

The info and illustrations about early days at CNC (posted by you on 9/5) mentioned Judene Branch.
I checked to make sure, and discovered that Judene (whom everyone called Judy - it wasn't until recently that I learned her 'real' first name) is the younger sister of a friend of mine. Judy graduated from Warwick High in 1961. I'm told Judene is her given name. It was a name her mother read in a novel and liked.
Judy/Judene is the several-years-younger sister of Ernie Branch (my classmate in high school, in the Apprentice School, and close friend for, well, forever). Judy's husband, Ray Hartless, graduated from WHS in 1960.
I have passed on contact info for   Jane Chambers (gleaned from your web site) in hopes that Judy can supply even more memories of early days at CNC.

COOL BEANS! Thanks so much, Bill!

From Betty Spain Uecker ('63) of VA - 09/08/10 - "New Phone Number":

Hi You All!

If you call the old number the new number is listed but it will not be there for long.

Hope you are well.

   GOTCHA! Thanks, Betty!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 09/05/10 - "Thank You, Lord (#4 in a Series of 8)":

      Thank you, Dearest Judy!

Penny Scale

A husband stepped on one of those penny scales that tell you your fortune and weight and dropped in a coin.

"Listen to this," he said to his wife, showing her a small, white card. "It says I'm energetic, bright, resourceful and a great lover."

"Yeah," his wife nodded, "and it has your weight wrong, too."

Take These Chains from My Heart

Written by Fred Rose and Hy Heath

Recorded by Hank Williams, 1953

Recorded by Ray Charles, 1963

(Take these chains from my heart and set me free)

Take these chains from my heart and set me free
You've grown cold and no longer care for me
All my faith in you is gone but the heartaches linger on
Take these chains from my heart and set me free

Take these tears from my eyes and let me see
Just a spark of the love that used to be
If you love somebody new, let me find a new love, too
Take these chains from my heart and set me free

<instrumental interlude-one full verse>

Give my heart just a word of sympathy (sympathy)
Be as fair to my heart as you can be (you can be)
Then if you no longer care for the love that's beating there
Take these chains from my heart and set me free

Take these chains from my heart and set me free (set me free)
