Nein, Nein, Nein

“There are nine requisites for contented living: HEALTH enough to make work a pleasure;
WEALTH enough to support your needs; STRENGTH enough to battle with difficulties
and forsake them; GRACE enough to confess your sins and overcome them; PATIENCE
enough to toil until some good is accomplished; CHARITY enough to see some good
in your neighbor; LOVE enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others; FAITH enough
to make real the things of God; HOPE enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.”

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(28 Aug 1749 - 22 Mar 1832)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Is your German not what it could be? Well, don't look at me; it's only been a few short years since I've stopped having nightmares starring my German professor from college!
But seriously, how could I resist a song called, "Nein, Nein, Nein" - even without a midi file - on this auspicious day -
09/09/09?!?

From Yahoo News - 09/08/09 - "Why 09/09/09 Is So Special":

Heather Whipps - Special to LiveScience.com - Tue Sep 8, 10:46 am ET

Have special plans this 09/09/09?

Everyone from brides and grooms to movie studio execs are celebrating the upcoming calendrical anomaly in their own way.

In Florida, at least one county clerk's office is offering a one-day wedding special for $99.99. The rarity of this Sept. 9 hasn't been lost on the creators of the iPod, who have moved their traditional Tuesday release day to Wednesday to take advantage of the special date. Focus Features is releasing their new film "9," an animated tale about the apocalypse, on the 9th.

Not only does the date look good in marketing promotions, but it also represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we'll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101), or a millennium (mark your calendars for January 1, 3001), depending on how you want to count it.

Though technically there's nothing special about the symmetrical date, some concerned with the history and meaning of numbers ascribe powerful significance to 09/09/09.

For cultures in which the number nine is lucky, Sept. 9 is anticipated - while others might see the date as an ominous warning.

Math magic

Modern numerologists - who operate outside the realm of real science - believe that mystical significance or vibrations can be assigned to each numeral one through nine, and different combinations of the digits produce tangible results in life depending on their application.

As the final numeral, the number nine holds special rank. It is associated with forgiveness, compassion and success on the positive side as well as arrogance and self-righteousness on the negative, according to numerologists.

Though usually discredited as bogus, numerologists do have a famous predecessor to look to. Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and father of the famous theorem, is also credited with popularizing numerology in ancient times.

"Pythagoras most of all seems to have honored and advanced the study concerned with numbers, having taken it away from the use of merchants and likening all things to numbers," wrote Aristoxenus, an ancient Greek historian, in the 4th century B.C.

As part of his obsession with numbers both mathematically and divine, and like many mathematicians before and since, Pythagoras noted that nine in particular had many unique properties.

Any grade-schooler could tell you, for example, that the sum of the two-digits resulting from nine multiplied by any other single-digit number will equal nine. So 9x3=27, and 2+7=9.

Multiply nine by any two, three or four-digit number and the sums of those will also break down to nine. For example: 9x62 = 558; 5+5+8=18; 1+8=9.

Sept. 9 also happens to be the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 +2).....

'64 Crabbers....here is a note from Warren Chapman that he has asked to be forwarded to you. You can see how much it has meant to him to receive cards/notes/pictures/etc. from his '64 classmates. If you haven't contacted him yet please try to do it this week as he's really appreciating the thoughts...or email him if you're not a card sender.    xoxoxo

_____________

My Dear Cheryl,

I want to thank you for your recent efforts to notify our HHS classmates on your mailing list of my whereabouts and current health challenge.

I have been truly amazed and extremely grateful for the outpouring of kind thoughts, prayers and good wishes that I have received as a result of your efforts...(and, of course, those of George Jenkins).

It's amazing to me that despite my coast-to-coast relocation way back in 1972 and being so little in touch with everyone since then, that so many would take the time to write, and send photos ....sometimes even collages of photos of their loved ones for me to see.

This outpouring from the heart has touched me deeply and lifted my spirits during times which, at their best,  are challenging for me.

I doubt that I will able to respond to each one individually with a thank you card. I am very limited in the use of my (former) writing hand....although I can still type. Most of you sent cards with a return address.. no emails.

....so Cheryl, I would be be most appreciative if you could send a copy of this email, via whatever mail-list you have, so that those who wrote to me will, at least, know I received their cards, calls, and lovely thoughts...and each of them has brought some joy into my day.

Here in California, (just north of the Golden Gate Bridge) I am blessed with the love of my family, my (former) wife and one daughter, 33, and the generous members of my spiritual community.  I contemplate this life.... and the next... daily....hourly.... and I only hope I have created even a small portion of the Love that I am blessed to be receiving and carrying forward with me.

Love and best wishes for You and all my friends and classmates from Hampton High.

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 09/07/09 - "Waitin' on a Woman":

Yea, Mom, I saw the newsletter, but didn't go see the vid as I was familiar with it and I was busy at the time.  I only have one more test, and I really can't study much for it (Ready For Action drills on the old Patriot control screen...tabs and all...hands on).   And today being Labor Day, I've got a bit more time on my hands so I followed your link.  Yea, it might be Brad's best work yet.  The vid is great and of course, needed a guy like Andy Griffith in it.  I like the end where Andy is all in white.  Looks like he is getting ready to head off to sit in on a temple session!

Yea, I knew we'd had missed Hetfield's b-day.  October of 1981 is when Metallica formed though.  The most influential and highest grossing album sales of any metal genre band...the Beatles of metal, I'd say.  Anyhow, thanks for the video and stuff.  Oh, I still have a nice amp (albeit smaller than my 4x12 Randall half stack) this is a 4x8 half stack that has a tube pre-amp.  It can kick it too.  but I think I've played it once in probably 2 years...sad, sad stuff...so it goes.  Well, maybe down the road a bit.  I have been working on the ol' banjo and can play & sing Lorena and Bonnie Blue Flag on it.  Working on Yellow Rose of Texas and of course, I need to figure out how to play Dixie on it!  I might learn a Yankee song....but only one!

From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN to       Gloria Woolard Price (Hampton HS - '65) of FL - 09/08/09 - "Armstrong Elementary":

Gloria,

After reading your input about Armstrong Elementary School, I think you are right, I do believe that teacher's name was Miss Naff, not Miss Nash. I don't remember a Mrs. Hubbard but Mrs. Blake does sound familiar, perhaps my 2nd or 6th grade teacher? After 50 plus years, memories get a little fuzzy.  Also, you said you moved to Henry Street in 1956, the year I graduated from NNHS. It just so happens that when I went to Armstrong I lived at 6 W. Southhampton Avenue, which I believe is only one block from Henry Street.

Sydney

I never cease to wonder at all the threads which bind our lives together. Thanks, Sydney!

It would seem that we've all been waiting nearly 55 years for the opportunity to share our memories of Hurricane Hazel. We've received at least six so far, but they're too wondrously long to fit here. I had planned to include them all in today's Newsletter, but I'll save them all for tomorrow - and even then, I believe I'll just need to point y'all to the soon-to-be-created Hurricane Hazel link to read and remember them.  Keep 'em coming!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes.com - 09/08/09:

Testing

During a test I was administering, I noticed that one of my married students, who was quite pregnant, kept rubbing her side. Before she left, I asked her, "Are you okay? I noticed you were holding onto your side."

"Oh, I'm fine," she answered. "It's just that my baby was pushing his foot up and down my ribs, and it hurt a little."

"Well, that's good," I said, feeling genuinely relieved.

"Yeah," she continued. "It's strange. He normally sleeps during your class..."

Nein, Nein, Nein!

- Die Ärzte

Nein, nein, nein!

schöne Frau, wo kommst du her?"
Sie sah mich an und sagte wörtlich:
"Fast aus Köln, nur etwas weiter nördlich!"

Nein, nein, nein!

ich will dich nie wieder seh'n!

Nein, nein, nein!
Uns're Liebe durfte nicht sein.
Großer Schmerz und schreckliche Pein -
Sie kam aus Düsseldorf am Rhein!

Nein, nein, nein!
Uns're Liebe durfte nicht sein.
Großer Schmerz und schreckliche Pein
und ich bin immer noch allein
