HEALTH ALERT:
From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64)
of VA - 09/09/08:
Carol,
Please add
Sandi Williams Patrick (class of 64) to the prayer
list. Sandi has given her permission, as she says she needs all the prayers she
can get. Sandi has kidney cancer (one kidney). The good news is it has not
spread. Her kidney will be removed hopefully next month. The physician has
stated she won't need chemo-great news.
Please ask for prayer for her during her agonizing wait and during her
recovery.
Thanks.
Cookie
Oh, no,
I'm so sorry to hear this, Cookie! Thanks for letting us know!
I've added sweet Sandi to the
Prayer Roll, and am adding my own prayers to the hundreds of others being
offered in her behalf:

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of
VA - 09/08/08 - "Mother ~ we all have or have had one of these, that's for sure!
If we...":
Please be sure to share this, it is beautiful!
Mother
This is a truly
BEAUTIFUL piece. Please read this at a slow pace, digesting every word and in leisure...do
not hurry....this is a treasure...
For those lucky to still be blessed with your mom, this
is beautiful. For those of us who aren't, this is even
more beautiful. For those who are moms, you'll love this.
The young mother set her foot on
the path of life. 'Is
this
the long way?' she asked. And the guide said: 'Yes, and
the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the
end will be better than the beginning.'
But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe
that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children,
and gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed them in the clear
streams; and the sun shone on them, and the young mother cried, 'Nothing will
ever be lovelier than this.'
Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark,
and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew
them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, 'Mother, we
are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come.'
And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the
children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she
said to the children,' A little patience and we are there.' So the children
climbed, and when they reached the top they
said, 'Mother, we would not have done it without you.'
And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the stars and said,
'This is a better day than the last, for my children
have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage.
Today, I've given them strength.'
And the next day came strange clouds which
darkened the
earth, clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and
stumbled, and the mother said: 'Look up. Lift your eyes to the light.'
And the children looked and saw above the clouds an
everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness.
And that night the Mother said, 'This is the best day of all, for I have shown
my children God.'
And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the
years, and the mother grew old and she was little and bent. But her children
were tall and strong, and walked with courage.
And when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather;
and at last they came to a hill, and
beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide.
And Mother
said, 'I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is
better than the beginning, for my children can walk
alone, and their children after them.'
And the children said, 'You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have
gone through the gates.'
And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed
after her.
And they said: 'We cannot see her but
she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is
a living presence.......'

Your mother is
always with you.... She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street;
she's the smell of bleach
in your freshly laundered socks; she's the cool
hand on your brow when you're not well. Your mother lives inside
your laughter. And she's crystallized in every tear drop. She's the place you
came from, your first home; and she's
the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love and your
first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate
you.
Not time, not space... not even death!
If you still
have Her near, then Cherish Her! For once she's gone, there's no going back!
If she has passed, then never forget her, not even for a second!
For when you have passed, she will be the first waiting for you, after Jesus has
welcomed you home!
PASS THIS ON TO
ALL THE MOTHERS & CHILDREN YOU KNOW.
MAY WE NEVER TAKE OUR MOTHERS FOR GRANTED...
Pass it on to the men...because they have mothers, too.
Thanks
so much, Joyce!
Funny how life was just plain better when my mama was only a phone call
away.....

From Richard Dawes (NNHS / HHS -
'62) of VA - 09/08/08 - "Republican National Convention":
It feels good to be home from the convention.
This past week has been very exciting and tiring, too much food and drink and not enough sleep. Each day started with a Va. state delegation breakfast, with speakers. Some days we also had luncheons with speakers. All speakers were big name: either political, news or entertainers. Some of the big heads were:
Political: (past Virginia governor) Jim Gilmore, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, attorney general Bob McDonald, US House of Representatives Eric Cantor and Thelma Drake, US Senators John Warner and George Allen. Not to mention, so many Va. State representatives. One morning we had Chris Farley’s brother, Kevin Farley and Jon Voight speak. Kevin is playing Michael Moore in the movie, ”An American Carol”
(Funny Guy) Jon Voight was also good. Jon started late and apologized, looking like a little boy because he said he overslept. We were given the opportunity to see the movie last Sunday night but it does not open until October.
We had lunch at the Calhoun Beach Club, which I think was originally a hotel built in the 20s? Pat Boone was our Speaker. We auctioned off a pair of his “White Bucks” that he wore to the event and signed. They went for a thousand dollars and the money was sent to Gustav relief.
Tuesday night after the
convention some of us went to a Mike Huckabee party at the Spin
Nightclub where the head liner was Josh Turner, now a big country
star. After he played two sets Mike Huckabee came on stage and auctioned off
three guitars, signed by Josh, Mike and Jeff Cook, a founding member
of the group, Alabama . The three guitars brought twenty two thousand
dollars for Hurricane Gustav relief.

From My #5 Son,
Nathaniel
Harty (Hillsboro HS,
IL
- '97) of IL - 09/08/08 - "Metallica - The Lord of the Unforgiven III":
Soes I really like
Metallica’s new album, and particularly “The Unforgiven III.” I was trying to
think of what movie or shows I could use for a video, and came up with several
ideas including using LOTR with a focus on Gollum. I asked
Joshua (Harty
- Hillsboro HS, IL
- '95 - of IL)
over MSN what he thought, and he suggested just focusing on the ring itself and
how it affected people. I liked that idea a lot, and ran with it.
Anyway, here is the video I really like the opening sequence. Once it gets to the lyrics, all bets are off, hehe.

Oh, WOWZERS!!!
I love the way you edited the music with the film - what an awesome job!
It's also a poignant reminder of how
deeply our choices affect our lives.
You rock, Faniel!

She Cried
- G. Richards / T. Daryll
(Jay and the Americans)
And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)
And when I told her
Her kisses were not like before
She cried (she cried)
I thought that our romance was over and done
But to her it had just begun
And when I told her
Another girl had caught my eye
She cried (she cried)
And when I kissed her
A kiss that only meant goodbye
She cried (she cried)
------ strings ------
(sha-la-la-la sha-la-la)
And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)
