Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

   We have another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.      Willie Elton Bowden, Class of June 1942, passed away in Newport News on Friday, September 4, 2009 at the age of 84.  He was the uncle of     Sharon Adcock Huskisson ('67) of TN.

  NEWPORT NEWS - Willie Elton Bowden Jr., 84, a lifelong resident of Newport News passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2009.

He was born on May 21, 1925, attended Newport News High School, graduating in the Class of 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Bowden retired in 1980 as a Metalsmith with the Naval Air Rework Facility.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Willie Bowden; a sister, Margaret Adcock Hubbard; and a brother, Robert 'Bubba' Bowden.

Survivors include his sister, Doris Hopkins (Leo) of Port Charlotte, Fla.; nieces, Pam McClelland (Bernie) of Yorktown, Sharon Adcock Huskisson of Knoxville, Tenn., Stephanie Roehm of Syracuse, N.Y. and Theresa Newman of Alexandria; nephews, Danny Adcock (Debbie) of Newport News, Leo Hopkins Jr. of Alexandria, Bobby Bowden of Newport News, and John Bowden of Havana, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Connie Bowden of Newport News.

Special thanks to Pam McClelland, his niece, for the devoted care she gave to him during his illness. Our family also wishes to thank the staff of Northampton and James River Convalescent Centers for their care and support during his stay.

Mr. Bowden is available for viewing on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery with the Rev. John Falk officiating.

When I was working for Pepsi as a route salesman, Elton would meet me at Farm Fresh every morning to help work the store, talk about current events, soap operas, or what he was passionate about at the time. I have many fond memories of those times, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all who loved him

So sorry to read of Willie's passing he was a fixture at 32nd and Washington Avenue downtown Newport News and was well known by all and was a real gentleman. Anything about sports he was up to date on it. God bless you, Willie.
