From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_on_the_Roof_%28song%29:

"Up on the Roof" is a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and recorded in 1962 by The Drifters. Released at the tail end of that year, the song became a big hit, reaching number 5 on the U.S. pop singles chart and number 4 on the U.S. R&B singles chart.

In addition to the hit appeal of the "second Drifters" lineup, "Up on the Roof" epitomized the urban romantic dream as presented by New York City Brill Building writers...

Thanks,

Dave
captarnold@vprj.net

Friday evening we’ll meet at 7:00 PM at the home of    Lynn Walker Brothers ’65 and her husband Barry (York HS - '65).  They have graciously extended an offer to open their home for the event.  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and we would request a $5.00 donation to assist in covering the expenses for that evening if you attend.  The change in location was decided when members of the reunion committee thought the original location might not be as suitable for conversation as originally planned.  The Brothers residence is located at 304 Dogwood Drive, Newport News.  The telephone number is 757-595-4116.  We’ll post a map providing directions.

From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of VA - 08/30/10 - "  Brian W. MOURING Obituary; Gloucester man remembered during Hampton memorial service: Mouring drowned at Outer Banks on Aug. 18":

Hi, Carol,

As I have not seen anything in your newsletters about this untimely death, I'm sure you didn't pick up on the connection to our school. I'm sending the link to the obituary as I'm pretty sure this young man's grandparents are    Wayne (Class of 63) and
Mary Byrd Johnson (Class of 65). It was all over the local news for several days about this drowning, but did not realize that I'd gone to school with his grandparents.

There's also an article in today's (Sunday) Daily Press about the memorial that was held yesterday.....

My neighbor works at Peninsula Funeral Home and said this young man's uncle,    Jimmy Johnson, graduated with      Fred Mays ('60 - of VA). He's also the nephew of    Donna Byrd Yow ('67) and    Rickey Yow ('67), who were living near Winston-Salem, NC three years ago. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news.

I promise I'll try to write you some happier news next time. Hope you and        Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) are doing okay. Talk to you more later.

Love,
Sandi

OHHH, Sandi! I read these accounts several times, agonizing for the family, never dreaming I knew so many of them! Thank you so much for telling me!

I'll make a belated Memorial Edition for Brian.....

From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 08/30/10 - "Challenge":

Carol,

Please post this along with the reunion information when you have a moment.

Thanks, Dave

I recently received a letter from the president of the Class of ’65,     Joe Wingo (of NC).  Joe was always one of our leaders and that continues today.  As we move closer to the 45-Year Reunion we have had questions regarding plans for the 50-Year.  Several members believe it should be a very special event.  Joe has taken the lead in getting us off to a strong start with his donation of $200.00 to be set aside to begin planning for the 50-Year Reunion.  Joe now challenges other class members to consider making a donation to increase the working fund for that event.  Please give consideration to Joe’s challenge to the members of the Class of 1965.  Thanks, Joe.

WOWZERONI!!! Thanks, Dave - and Joe!

From Brownie Shaffer Haracivet ('62) of VA - 08/29/10 - "  Charlotte Rawls":

Dear Carol,

I'm trying to contact Charlotte Rawls ('59) and wonder if you have her email address. If you do, please send mine to her and ask her to contact me.

Thanks for all you do for us.

Warmly, Brownie

I'm not in touch with Charlotte, Brownie, but I thought I might have more success in finding her than I did.   Her dear mama died almost three years ago, and Charlotte's hubby had predeceased her:

http://nnhs65.com/08-19-07-NNHS-Mildred-Pop-Wilder-Rawls-Steiger.html
I tried whitepages.com, but I suppose I didn't "hold my mouth right". Sorry, Brownie!

Maybe someone else will know where to find her.....

We'll open it up to the class and see what we can learn, but first, I asked our Wizard of Wonderment:

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/29/10 - "RE: Charlotte Rawls Bowry ('59)":

Maybe Charlotte’s brother will provide contact information:

Ashburn L. Rawls, Jr..... (in FL)
(
a.k.a. Lee Rawls - Ferguson HS - '65)
Age: 60-64

I could not find a “Charlotte Bowry” on
whitepages
, even with that unique surname. Searching on only “Bowry” turned up more than 100 hits nationwide. Searching only Bowry in VA turned up 30.

I can see from the obit that her son is William T. Bowry, Jr., so her husband was William T. Bowry, Sr. SSDI says he died in NN on 12 Jan 2004. I searched whitepages for any William Bowry; not one listed. Was hoping that a phone account was retained in his name; many widows do that.

Methinks that none of them have listed phone numbers. That takes us back to her brother in FL.

Good Luck
Dave

   Thank you, Captain!

From Fred Field (June '45) of CA - 08/30/10, 10:42 AM - "Emily V. Hoffman Search":

Hello Carol, Mon. Aug. 30

At 86, Emily would have been born ca. 1924.
Presume she started school at age 6 = ca. 1930.
The (then) 11 year track would have her graduating ca. 1941.
So far maiden name is unknown. Can only presume it began with "V".
My earliest annual is Feb. 1942. No prospects found.
I also checked June & Feb. 1943. No prospects..

The most valuable clue would be definite ID of maiden name.

Possibly graduated from Morrison (now Warwick) High which is now in NN.

Thank you so much, Fred!   This one was a stumper, for sure. I even called the funeral home.  They were very helpful, providing me her given names (Emily Elizabeth), nickname (Betty), and birthday (02 Sept 1923), but they and I were both astounded to find they had NO maiden name listed for her!

By the way, just when was that twelfth grade added, Fred??

Thanks for all you do to help us, Fred!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 08/30/10 - "cancer":

I'll forward this till they find a cure for ALL cancers!!

Cancer is a strange cell.
You can go along for years in remission and then one day it pops its head up again.
If you ever have it you will never be free of it.

Pray for the day there will be a permanent cure.

A SMALL REQUEST...

A small request.....Just one line:

Dear God,
I pray that You will guide someone to find a cure for cancer.
Amen.

All you are asked to do is keep this circulating - even if it's only to one more person.
In memory of anyone you know who has been struck down by cancer or is still living with it.
A Candle Loses Nothing by Lighting Another Candle.

Please Keep This Candle Going.

   Thanks so much, Norris!

Our cat, Figaro, comes home between 10 or 11 at night to eat. If he's late, I turn on the carport light and call him until he appears.

One day my daughter was explaining to a friend where we live, and her friend said, "Is that anywhere near the house where the woman stands on her steps late at night and sings opera?"

A horse breeder story

A Kentucky horse breeder had a filly that won every race in which she was entered. But as she got older she became very temperamental. He soon found that when he raced her in the evening, she would win handily, but when she raced during the day she would come in dead last. He consulted the top veterinarians and horse psychologists to no avail. He finally had to give up because it had become a real night mare.

How Do You Build A Better World?

How do you build a better world? That is a question that has puzzled mankind for centuries. Many things have been tried. Some have helped and some haven’t. I think, though, that I was given a part of the answer just the other day.

My brother had just cleaned out his closet. It was something I needed to do as well even though I was afraid I might get lost in there and not find my way back out. When he brought over some of the extra clothes to my dad’s house, he asked me to look through them and see if there was anything I could use. I ended up just picking out a few pair of short pants to replace my worn out cut off jeans. I couldn’t see keeping more clothes that I didn’t need. I volunteered instead to take the rest of them over to the Goodwill store and donate them for him.

I loaded his clothes in the back of my car and then decided to brave the clutter of my own closet to add to his donation. It was a scary sight opening that door. The mess was tremendous. Still, the thought of doing something good for another spurred me on and kept me going. It took a long time, but I got it done. I was left with a much emptier closet, but a much fuller heart. As I carried my own bags of clothes to add to my brother's, I couldn’t help but smile. It was then that I saw how we all can go about building a better world.

We can do it one kind act at a time. We can do it one gift of charity at a time. We can do it one shared smile at a time. We can do it one uplifting word at a time. We can do it one heartfelt hug at a time. We can even do it one donated shirt at a time. We can build a better world with each act of love we share and good thing we do. We can do it with helpful hands and caring hearts. We can do it with cheerful spirits and joyous souls. We can do it knowing that God and His angels are smiling down upon us and helping us every step of the way.

Up on the Roof

Written by Gerry Goffin (b. 11 Feb 1939) and Carole King (b. 09 Feb 1942)

Recorded by The Drifters, 1962 (Peaked at # 5 in 1963)

Later covered as minor Top 100 singles by The Cryan' Shames in 1968, by Laura Nyro in 1970,
and by James Taylor as a slower-paced Top 30 pop version in 1979.
Also covered as album tracks by co-songwriter Carole King in 1970 [Carole King Writer CD]
and by Neil Diamond in 1993 [Neil Diamond Up on the Roof CD].

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)

brief instrumental-chiefly strings

At night the stars put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me

I keep a-tellin' you

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, baby (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, honey (up on the roof)
FADE

Everything is all right (up on the roof)
