Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have more sad news today. Betty Van Arsdale Hoffman passed away in Newport News on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the age of 86. Wife of Stokes Hoffman, she was a June 1940 graduate of Newport News High School.

NEWPORT NEWS - Emily 'Betty' V. Hoffman, 86, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. She was the wife of Stokes Hoffman.

Friends are welcome to pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, in the Peninsula Funeral Home Chapel with the burial immediately following in Peninsula Memorial Park.

				NEWPORT NEWS - Emily 'Betty' V. Hoffman, 86, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. A lifelong Newport News resident, she graduated from Newport News High School and Longwood College. As a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, she was active in the church circle. Betty was also active in the garden club, bridge group and was an avid reader. Survivors include her husband, Ira Stokes Hoffman; daughter, Elizabeth Hoffman Stanhagen and husband, Eric; son, Paul Stokes Hoffman and wife, Laura.

Dear Stokes and family,
Betty was always one of my favorite cousins. When I was a little girl, visiting the family, she always played with me, taught me how to eat fried oysters, and fed me wonderful goodies. The last time we were in NN was at least 10 years ago, and our fond memories will remain with us forever. Please know that our love, prayers and sympathy are with you all.

I am truly sorry to hear that Mrs. Hoffman is no longer with us. I have only know Mrs. Hoffman for a short time but I am blessed to have met her. With her smile, kindness and pleasant manner, you always wanted to be where she was. She always knew how to brighten your day. Mrs. Hoffman was so pleased with the small things in life. We made her a bow for her wreath at Christmas and you would have thought we had given her the world; it made her day. We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

My wife, Janie (Slack Lee - Warwick HS - '54), who went to Parkview Elementary, says that the lady in question was Betty Van Arsdale; her fourth grade teacher (at that time - 1945-1946 - Miss V was unmarried).

Apparently she preferred Betty to Emily. She grew up somewhere in the East End (possibly on the Hampton side of the city line; my wife isn't sure). But she most likely went to either to NNHS or HHS.

A check of the 1930 census probably would pin that down.

Later married to Stokes Hoffman, they lived for some period of time on James River Drive.

   Ahhh! Thank you so very much, Bill - and Janie! The obituary itself confirmed that she graduated from both Newport News High School and Longwood College; it just neglected to include her maiden name.

Perhaps it was this family. They lived at 59 Sycamore in NN. I looked at the actual census, and the name looks like “Emily”.

          Mary E Vanarsdale - age 56

          Howard Vanarsdale - age 27

          May M Vanarsdale - age 38

          Emsley E Vanarsdale - age 6

   From Fred Field (June '45) of CA - 09/04/10, 1:57 PM:

Tightens things up. My first Anchor (Beacon Annual) was Feb. 42 so she must be in an earlier one.

Presume she was hired as a teacher in Sept. 1945 as a fresh 4 year college graduate

Scaling back, she would probably have graduated from NNHS in Feb. or June 1941 latest.

Maybe     Fred Mays ('60 - of VA) has the some of the 1941 and earlier Beacon Annuals? The NN Main Street Library has a good collection, but far from complete.

Living on Sycamore Avenue in the 1930s nails down her schools as in NN (including St. Vincent).

A last resort might be phone calls to some Van Arsdales in the NN area phone directory.
