Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's
Newsletter theme is one of those songs that gets into my head and just stays
there - so I thought I'd share it with y'all!
BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJLIiF15wjQ - Wannabe - Spice Girls, 1996
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wannabe_%28song%29:
"Wannabe" is a song by British pop group Spice Girls. Written by the group members, Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard during the group's first professional songwriting session, and produced by Rowe and Stannard for the group's debut album Spice, released in November 1996. The song was written and recorded very quickly, the result was considered lacklustre by their label, so it was sent to be mixed by Dave Way, but the group was not pleased with the final result, and it was mixed again, this time by Mark "Spike" Stent.
"Wannabe" is an uptempo pop song that incorporates a mix of hip-hop, rap and dance music. The lyrics, which address the value of female friendship over the heterosexual bond, became an iconic symbolism of female empowerment and the most emblematic song of the group's Girl Power philosophy.[1] Despite receiving mixed reviews from music critics, the song won Best British-Written Single at the 1997 Ivor Novello Awards and Best Single at the 1997 BRIT Awards.....
"Wannabe" is a dance-pop song with influences of hip-hop and rap.[1] Written in the key of B major, it is set in the time signature of common time and moves at a moderate tempo of 116 beats per minute.[17] It uses the sequence B–D–E–A–A♯ as its chord progression during the refrain, the chorus and the bridge, and F♯–G♯m–E–B for the verses.[17] The song is constructed in a verse-pre-chorus-chorus form, with a rapped bridge before the third and final chorus.[17] Musically, it is "energised" by a highly syncopated synthesised riff, and by the way the repetitive lyrics and rhythm are highlighted during the bridge.[18] "Wannabe" presents a different version of the traditional pop love song performed by females, mainly because of the energetic, self-assertive style that expresses a confident independence that is not reliant on the male figure for its continuance.[19]
The song opens with a laugh,[20] followed by undislodgeable piano notes.[21] Over the notes, the first lines of the refrain are sung with a spoken–almost shouted vocals, in a call and response interaction between Brown and Halliwell.[19][20] The words "tell", "really" and " I wanna" are repeated,[18] so that the voices' tone and the lyrics build up an image of female self-assertion...[19
HEALTH ALERT:
From
Me
('65) of NC - 08/27/14:
Several weeks ago I noticed a crusty, itchy spot which refused to heal
right on the top of my head.
At
He told Paul that he thought we'd established long since that I was insane. Nevertheless he took a look at the lesion and determined that it was a pre-cancerous growth. He assured me that he could freeze it off, and proceeded to do just that. My prognosis is excellent - for which I am very much relieved, as if we had waited longer to seek medical attention, it might have become necessary to remove my head, which would have been annoying, I must say. The biggest cause of skin cancer is generally considered to be prolonged exposure to the sun. In fact, about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanomas are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Believe me when I say that anyone who ventures outside any less than I do is probably hospitalized or incarcerated. My idea of "enjoying the summer" is moving as swiftly as I can from one source of air conditioning to another. I realize that we
cannot undo the wrongs we inflicted upon our bodies in years past, but
the moral to the story is still this: Keep your heads covered!
