From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_or_White":
" 'Black or White' was the first single taken from Michael Jackson's Dangerous album, released in October 1991. The single is considered the biggest selling rock song of the 1990s. "Black or White" is a mix of hard rock, blues, funk, dance and rap. It is also considered one of Michael Jackson's most successful tracks.
Written, composed, and arranged by Jackson with the rap lyrics by Bill Bottrell, it is a song that promotes racial unity..."

UPDATE ON "THE PROBLEM" - 08/25/09:
Some of you are have been blocked from viewing the site since 07/20/09 out of safety concerns. Most of y'all are not. Our server, 00freehost.com also hosts many, many other sites. Five (down from six) of them are having malware "issues", so to protect the general public from any possible harm, a warning has been placed by some systems. Here's the latest from Google:
What is the current listing status for 00freehost.com?
Site is listed as suspicious - visiting this web site may harm your computer.
Part of this site was listed for suspicious activity 18 time(s) over the past 90 days.

OH, NO!!! They checked it again today, and found something harmful again on five of 00freehost's hosted sites yesterday..... I'm beginning to wonder if .00freehost will ever do anything about those offending sites so that this nightmare will end for the rest of us...
"But wait! There's MORE!"
From Doug Nelson ('64) of VA -
08/24/09 - " 'The Problem' ":
Hi Carol,
I also used to get the dreaded maroon "Reported Attack Site!" page when I opened
one of your Newsletters.
Jean Poole Burton ('64 of RI) and the others, that if they do this
nothing terrible will happen. They will be able to resume enjoying your
Newsletters and website.
Thank you so very much, Doug!
"Thass wha' I been tryin' to tell 'em down at th' pool hall!"
My Cousin,
Jim Atkinson
(John Randolph
Tucker HS - '77) of AZ - 08/24/09 - "Cannot Open Your Newsletters...":
Hey Cuzz,
Jim. Honey. I am a firm supporter of FaceBook - for other people. It is a truly marvelous networking site! But I just cannot bring myself to joining it for five good reasons.
First - It was designed for college age kids. It's one
thing to have it trickle down to middle age friends of theirs, but for old
fogies like me to participate in it - well, it jes' ain't right!
Nathaniel
(Harty - Hillsboro HS,
IL - '97 - of IL)
sent me a delicious bit of evidence the other day clearly demonstrating why this should be so,
but it's too risqué for me to share with my G-rated readers. Let's just
say it strengthened my resolve.....
Second - I'd have to shift my gears. I'm waaay too old for that. See reason #1.
Third - I thought I was extremely open about myself, but having read enough entries on FaceBook to catch a feel for it, I've decided that perhaps I'm much more private and secretive than I thought!
Fourth - Have you never noticed what an addictive personality I have?!? There are games to play and tests to take and people to search and challenges to offer and all manner of enticements there! Were I to stick one little piggy toe into that water, I'd soon be in so far over my head that I'd never be able to leave my computer at all! And I'd have no time to do what I do here (which I think is rather similar, anyway), and I'm committed to continue doing that which I have begun.
Fifth - I've forgotten, but this one is good, too.
So you have fun with it, Sweetie; I must abstain - courteously.

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 08/24/09 - "Web
site.":
Just got back from visiting my daughter in
Colorado. I had a great 3 weeks away. I could access the site from daughter
Kimmy's computer just fine. Now that I am home, I got my computer back from the
Doctor (Friend Wes Thompson) today, but mine won't let me get on. Keep getting a
big red box with the words "Attack Site" in it. I'll call Wes and ask him about
it tomorrow. Just wanted you to know.
Love ya,
Ruthie
Thank you so much, Ruthie!
You illustrated the point Doug is making beautifully!
It's the preferences that YOU yourself have placed upon your computer that makes
the difference! Kimmy's computer had been "ordered" to do
otherwise!
It's
interesting to me to note that of more than 550 subscribers, only 15
have reported any problems - and two of those 15 are
Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) and me;
Nathaniel
has no such warning on his computer right here in the same house!
I cannot tell - or even recommend - you either to change your preferences as Doug did, or to ignore it as Paul and I do. You know more about your safety systems than I do. I have chosen to leave mine as they are for the moment just to see when either 00freehost.com is going to discipline its offending sites, or when Google is going to stop taking such a hard line against those innocent sites such as ours who are simply guilty by association.
From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 08/24/09:
Carol
I don't know if this helps or not, but I've NEVER had a problem opening the newsletters or getting to the site.
Guess I'm just lucky!
Renee

so much, Renee!

While searching through my files for the Divider Lines to use on the 08/16/09 White as Snow Newsletter, I saw that the 12/01/04 Once Upon a December Newsletter carried the obituary for Miss Mary Helmer / Mrs. Mary Williams, and the promise from me - "I'll try to make her teacher page right away."
Hmmm. Well, if "right away" can be interpreted to mean "sometime within the next five years," then, JA - I took care of that right away.....
Miss Helmer has frequently been mentioned as a "favorite teacher" by those signing our Guest Book. This page is now ready for you to share your memories of her:

The Jews are NOT promoting brain washing children in military training camps,
teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and
other non Muslims!
The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics, or blow
themselves up in German restaurants.
There is NOT one single Jew who has destroyed a church.
There is NOT a single Jew who protests by killing people.
The Jews don't traffic slaves, nor have leaders calling for Jihad and death to
all the Infidels.
Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard education
and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.
Muslims must ask "what can they do for humankind" before they demand that
humankind respects them!!
Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians

P.S.: The Muslims, using their always impeccable logic, would claim these
statistics prove how discriminated against they really are!

Carol,
An observant Jew can walk any distance necessary to get to services on the Sabbath. We have one 80 something gentleman in my congregation that parks his car in the lot of the synagogue Friday before sunset for Friday nite services, then walks 3 miles home. He also walks back for Sabbath services, then home, and then again for Sabbath evening services. He then drives home Saturday nite. He has more strength than this 60 year old.

Hi, Carol:
It was so nice to read the comments you posted from
Ivan Anker ('67) of VA and
Buddy David ('61) of VA
who was the Class President has an open house
reunion for the Class of 1961 and they are the most special gatherings on Friday
evenings. He and
Libby (Blechman David - '61 of VA)
set an example of hospitality in their
home. Reunions during the week become
the thing to do when the class members reach retirement age, which is what we
old Marines of Platoon 276 Parris Island 1957 do now. Travel is less hectic
during the week as well.
Thank you so much, Joe!
If I may, allow me to challenge
Captain Dave (Spriggs - '64 -
of VA)
to find some data on the
Peninsula Dairy and the
Peninsula Dairy Store that operated on Jefferson Avenue between
36th Street and 37th Street in Newport News. It was a large art deco green
building, with horseshoe counters with single stools, where they served ice
cream cones and shakes.
Here is hoping it will jar
a few memories among the TYPHOON Nation of subscribers and result in a page on
Our Old Stomping Grounds.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 08/24/09 - "Redneck Technology":
Redneck Technology
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York Scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion, that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story in the LA Times read: “California archaeologists, finding traces of 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers.”
One week later, the Roanoke Times, a local newspaper in Roanoke, VA reported the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Poage's Mill, Bubba Brown, a self-taught archaeologist reported that he found absolutely nothing. Bubba has therefore concluded that 300 years ago VA had already gone wireless.”
Just makes you proud to be from Virginia, doesn't it?

Multiple Choice
The blonde reported for her university final examination that
consists of "yes/no" type questions. She takes her seat in the examination hall,
stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration
takes her purse out, removes a coin and starts tossing the coin and marking the
answer sheet "Yes" for Heads and "No" for Tails. Within half an hour she is all
done, whereas the rest of the class is sweating it out During the last few
minutes, she is seen desperately throwing the coin, muttering and sweating. The

"I finished the exam in half an hour, but I'm rechecking my answers."

Black or White
Written, composed, arranged and performed by
Michael Jackson,
1991
(29 Aug 1958 - 25 June 2009)
I took my
baby
On a Saturday bang
Boy is that girl with you
Yes were one and the same
Now I believe in miracles
And a miracle
Has happened tonight
But, if
You're thinkin'
About my baby
It don't matter if you're
Black or white
They print my message
In the Saturday sun
I had to tell them
I ain't second to none
And I told about equality
An its true
Either you're wrong
Or you're right
But, if
You're thinkin'
About my baby
It don't matter if you're
Black or white
I am tired of this devil
I am tired of this stuff
I am tired of this business
So when the
Going gets rough
I ain't scared of
Your brother
I ain't scared of no sheets
I ain't scare of nobody
Girl when the
Goin' gets mean
(l. t. b. rap performance)
Protection
For gangs, clubs
And nations
Causing grief in
Human relations
Its a turf war
On a global scale
I'd rather hear both sides
Of the tale
See, its not about races
Just places
Faces
Where your blood
Comes from
Is where your space is
I've seen the bright
Get duller
I'm not going to spend
My life being a color
(Michael)
Don't tell me you agree with me
When I saw you kicking dirt in my eye
But, if
You're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
I said if
You're thinkin' of
Being my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white
I said if
You're thinkin' of
Being my brother
It don't matter if you're
Black or white
Ooh, ooh
Yea, yea, yea now
Ooh, ooh
Yea, yea, yea now
It's black, it's white
It's tough for you
To get by
It's black, it's white, whoo
It's black, it's white
It's tough for you
To get by
It's black, it's white, whoo
