08/22/09 - NNHS Newsletter - Black and White
“We Americans entered a new phase in our history -

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's White Newsletter pays homage to the landmark 1954 United States Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education striking down racial segregation in public schools. I am sure that many of y'all, especially those who graduated before 1958, will recall this decision with more clarity than I. My most vivid memory is that Norfolk city schools stubbornly refused to comply with the order, and closed their schools rather than desegregate. As a result, their students (and their parents) had three choices - attend private schools, transfer to public schools in neighboring cities such as ours, or drop out completely. Those were dark days indeed. It seems a lifetime ago, and indeed, I suppose that it was.....

BONUS #2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOr4O66WZW0 - Black and White - Three Dog Night, um, later...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_White_(Three_Dog_Night_song):
"Black and White" is a song written in 1954 by David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson. The most successful recording of the song was the pop version by Three Dog Night in 1972, when it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The song was inspired by the United States Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education that outlawed racial segregation of public schools. The original folk song was first recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957.[1] The original lyrics of the song opened with this verse, in reference to the court:

40 YEARS AGO TODAY:

Carol,
While visiting with my cousins this past
Wednesday, My cousin, Jeanene Anker '60, was there, too, and the subject of
reunions was brought up. It was mentioned that some former classmates,
Bert ('60) and Jeanene included, are practicing
Orthodox Jews. All reunions are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays which make
it impossible for them to attend. Our Sabbath begins sunset Friday and ends a
little after sunset Saturday. One of the restrictions is no riding in vehicles
at that time. Was wondering if the organizers of the reunions would consider
adding a Thursday activity to the reunion to give them the option to attend.
This should pertain to classes as I'm sure there were Jewish kids in all
classes. I know my cousins would love to go to theirs. The mentioned that they
loved their high school days a lot.
Thanks, Ivan '67
Oh, WOW! Your note caught me completely off guard, Ivan. I wonder how many others have been as insensitive as I. I knew all the puzzle pieces; I just never put them together correctly to get the whole picture. I knew the Friday night festivities were out of the question, but had neglected to consider how the Saturday night reunions would be impacted by travel needs.
I wonder if a Thursday evening pot luck dinner could be easily attached to upcoming reunions?? That way a special section could be labeled and set apart for Kosher foods.
Back in 2002, the Class of 1965 held a Saturday afternoon Birthday Picnic in the park for members of the Classes of 1962 and 1965 who were both having reunions that weekend, and it was one of the most enjoyable and relaxing - and most inexpensive, I'm sure - get-togethers I've ever attended:

The fall probably wouldn't lend itself to evening hours outside, but surely there are indoor halls which can be rented for such purposes for a nominal fee, making this an adaptable concept for a Thursday evening??
I'm turning this discussion
over the the various Reunion Committee Chairmen, Ivan. Thank
you for raising our awareness!

From the President of the Class of 1965,
Joe Wingo of NC - 08/21/09 - "
Coach
Nuttycombe's
Geography Classroom":
Carol,
That classroom certainly had multiple uses. Just before the start of football practice in the summer, we all had to report to that room for our “physicals”. And those of us that played football remember well what that consisted of!!!
Later, during the season, we had to report to this same classroom on Sunday evenings to watch game films from the previous Friday night.
Finally, I also had Coach Nuttycombe’s Geography class in this same room, too.
So you can see I remember this room very well and for many different reasons!!!.
Hope you and yours are all
well and happy. My best to your patriot son (
Joe
I DO see, Joe Sweetie, and I added your recollection to Coach Nuttycombe's page, too! Thanks so much!

Newsletter Reply":
Hi, Carol:
Wayne
Stokes ('65) of VA
expressed his concern over the seeming lack of contributions by your subscribers
regarding their memories of NNHS. Perhaps any
decline in contributions could be because you and
Dave (Spriggs - '64 - of VA) have done
such a marvelous job with Our Old Stomping
Grounds with before and current photo images. These topics seem to get a
lot of participation from your subscribers. There just aren't too many places
left to jar memories among the TYPHOON Nation.
I suppose one memory about the
World War II Memorial Swimming Pool that comes to mind is probably a bit
embarrassing for the young TYPHOON working at the pool who really loved to have
fun. Part of that was kidding around about the Director of the Recreation and
Parks, then Mr. C.C. Nixon. He was an elderly gentleman, and would come to the
pool just before closing time to secure the cash proceeds of the day to place it
in the safe.
At the time, a song that was quite popular was "CC Rider" and in our quest for
fun, we referred to the boss as "CC Rider" because of his two initials and no
one knew his first name.
Of course, calling him by this "nickname" was sure to be revealed, and sure
enough one time when he phoned the Recreation Center Office, one of us took the
call, and then announced to the person being called that "CC Rider is on the
phone" and he overhead that comment. He was sorely offended that we would
consider teasing about him.
It sure threw cold water of what we thought was fun, and we ceased being
seemingly disrespectful to the boss.
He did hand out the paychecks!!!
Now I hope you receive lots of positive memories of NNHS
days from your subscribers. The "Bankwalkers" and the "Naked Boys" stories
always bring a good laugh about our youthful indiscretions.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

From Jay Styles ('68) of VA - 08/21/09 - "You have received a YouTube video!":
I had the pleasure of attending a Moody Blues concert in the early seventies and it was amazing to say the least. At the closure of this video, Justin Hayward, the Blues leading singer, makes an appearance, he can still sing. Hope you enjoy this as much as I.
Jay
Thanks, Jay
Sweetie!
Unfortunately, your video seems to have been lost in transit, so I located
several others of Justin Hayward; perhaps I even fond the one you sent!

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of
VA - 08/21/09 - "Tick
Warning":
I know some of you "show-offs" will ignore this warning!!!
TICK WARNING!
I hate it when people forward bogus warnings, and I have even done it myself a couple times unintentionally, but this one is real, and it's important.
Please send this warning to everyone on your e-mail list.
If someone comes to your front door saying they are checking for
ticks due to the warm weather and asks you to take your clothes off and dance
around
with your arms up, DO NOT DO IT!! THIS IS A SCAM!!
They only want to see you naked.
I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid.
Thanks, Joyce!

FINALLY:
From ArcaMax Jokes.com - 08/21/09:
Clothing Store
While working in a clothing store, I noticed
that people had no shame about returning items that obviously had been worn.
One rainy morning I walked in and found a discolored blazer hanging on the
rack with other returns. "People return the most filthy, nasty things," I
commented to my supervisor who was standing nearby.
Eyebrow raised, she said, "That's my jacket."
*************
Interesting Emergency Calls
Dispatcher: Nine-one-one.
Caller: Hi, is this the police?
Dispatcher: This is 911. Do you need police assistance?
Caller: Well, I don't know who to call. Can you tell me how to cook a turkey?
I've never cooked one before.
Dispatcher: Nine-one-one. What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: I'm trying to reach nine eleven but my phone doesn't have an eleven on
it.
Dispatcher: This is nine eleven.
Caller: I thought you just said it was nine-one-one.
Dispatcher: Yes, ma'am nine-one-one and nine-eleven are the same thing.
Caller: Honey, I may be old, but I'm not stupid.
Dispatcher: Nine-one-one. What's the nature of your emergency?
Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart.
Dispatcher: Is this her first child?
Caller: No, you idiot! This is her husband!
Dispatcher: Nine-one-one.
Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath. Darn...I
think I'm going to pass out.
Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?
Caller: I'm at a pay phone. North and Foster. Damn....
Dispatcher: Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?
Caller: No.
Dispatcher: What where you doing before you started having trouble breathing?
Caller: Running from the police.
