Eileen Casey Sparkman
(10 June 1949 - 16 Aug 2011)

Ferguson High School Class of  1968

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
   I was shocked and saddened this morning to read of the passing of
   Eileen Casey Sparkman, Ferguson High School Class of 1968.  Widow of  Steve Sparkman, Class of 1963 (01 Feb 1944 - 04 Feb 1999), Eileen was an active participant of the NNHS Class of 1963 reunions and maintained many friendships with Steve's classmates.  She passed away on the Outer Banks of North Carolina during her sleep on Tuesday morning, August 16, 2011 at the age of 62.  I only met her twice, in 2003 and 2008, but was struck by her friendly and vivacious personality.

From the Daily Press - 08/18/11:

  Eileen Casey Sparkman

NEWPORT NEWS - Eileen Casey Sparkman, 62, passed away during a peaceful sleep on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on the morning of Aug. 16, 2011.

Born in Bethesda, Md., Eileen resided in the city of Newport News since 1957. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Miles Casey, founder of Casey Auto Group, and Alice Reynolds Casey.

Eileen graduated from Ferguson High School in 1968 and married Stephen P. Sparkman of Newport News. Married 29 years, Eileen and Steve lived a wonderful life dedicated to their two children, friends, and family. With a husband who adored her, they spent their time enjoying getaways on their sailboat, Cheers, and gathering with family for holidays. After losing her husband to a battle with cancer, Eileen was surrounded by many close friends, her "Beach Girls", a dedicated sister and brothers, many nieces and nephews, loving granddaughters and her children. She recently wrote, "I'm grateful to have special friends that I wine, dine and vacation with. And fortunately I still have my siblings Art, Colleen, and Pat with their families nearby." Eileen truly believed that her greatest accomplishment was her children and would always brag that she did a great job raising her son and daughter.

Eileen is survived by her oldest brother, Arthur Shawn Casey and wife Judy; a sister, Colleen Casey Monk and husband Nick; and youngest brother, Patrick Timothy Casey and wife Susan. Her legacy will live on through her children; son, Stephen Payne Sparkman II and his wife, Anne Wimbrow Sparkman of Poquoson; daughter, Dr. Stacey Sparkman Hall and husband, James Michael Hall of Williamsburg.

In continuation of her legacy, Eileen, otherwise known as 'Gi-Gi' by her five granddaughters, is survived by Swayne Wimbrow Sparkman, Quinn Atkinson Sparkman, Lanie Brooks Hall, Gracie May Hall, and Abigail Anne Hall.

A visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport News. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

I am so very sorry to hear the news of Mrs. Sparkman. I just loved and admired her so much! Growing up, she was always so good to me and SO MUCH fun to be with. She had all the parents & kids laughing. It is just a shame to loose another great member of the Sea Turkeys.

I was blessed that I was able to visit and hug your mother back in March at my Mom's memorial. She was a very special woman and will be missed greatly!

My thoughts are with you, Stephen & Stacey, the Monks, and all the family members.

Colleen and family,

We send our heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Back in the '70's Eileen, Colleen, Betty Roach and Nancy played doubles tennis and we had a lot of laughs, and some bruises along the way!
Eileen was such a fun person to be with and she is gone far too soon from this earth. While we will miss her, even those of us who did not see her regularly, she has gone on to be with Steve and I know they are having a grand time "up there."

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Eileen. For the past several Ferguson High School reunions (class of '68), I had the pleasure of having several very interesting conversations with her, while at the reunions. I will certainly miss her at the next reunion.

  O Sacred Head Now Wounded

Text: Anonymous; trans. by Paul Gerhardt and James W. Alexander
Music: Hans L. Hassler, 1564-1612; harm. by J.S. Bach, 1685-1750

1. O sacred Head, now wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
with thorns, thine only crown:
how pale thou art with anguish,
with sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish
which once was bright as morn!

2. What thou, my Lord, has suffered
was all for sinners' gain;
mine, mine was the transgression,
but thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior!
'Tis I deserve thy place;
look on me with thy favor,
vouchsafe to me thy grace.

3. What language shall I borrow
to thank thee, dearest friend,
for this thy dying sorrow,
thy pity without end?
O make me thine forever;
and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
outlive my love for thee.
